What is a common regret of many working parents who try to balance building a successful career and raising a great family? 30/07/2019

A note to working moms...
how to make the best of your situation, and use "work" to be a better "parent"!

What is a common regret of many working parents who try to balance building a successful career and raising a great family? Rohith KN's answer: “Family time” - naturally. This is the biggest regret. But, like most difficult problems, this can be tackled with a bit of “Behavioral Engineering”. Post the initial compromises (that can be somewhat addressed), there are a ton of valuable benefits that money can’t buy...

How can I prevent my child from being disadvantaged long-term by my own lack of STEM skills/education? 29/07/2019

STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Coming from tech background, reading this on FB, being in Bangalore, we naturally feel that teaching STEM to kids in school is fundamental… not if you dig in deeper.

Recently, I came across a related question on Quora… it seemed like a question from a Mom who is not equipped with STEM and she was wondering if her lacuna impacts her kids. This got me thinking…

To start with, what has this curriculum been teaching kids?

Na (Sodium) gave an electron to Cl (Chlorine), now that I know this, how is my life better?

Has anyone used LCM, HCF, GCF in their careers?

My grandmom could bargain in 5 languages and she know grammar of none.

Now, we are escalating this by teaching STEM and the dichotomy seems to grow bigger.

What really don’t need to teach kids with more and more concepts but things that will make their life better + real-life problem-solving skills.

How about communication instead of Grammar? How about financial responsibility instead of LCM? How about cooking and being healthy instead of Chemistry and Cellular biology?

So, here is our definition of what STEM should be and a hint of how we address this in futureReadykids… get set for a long meandering post [ツ]

This is our curriculum for k-12 and beyond. This complements and augments the current school syllabus.

Basically, school should prepare students for future. Post their education, students are expected to create “value and do something useful for the society” for them to earn a living. So, we have designed our curriculum with “create value” in mind. Based on this, our program is as follows:

For kindergarten -1st grade, it is a program for parents, as lot of learning in this age comes from copying parents.

For 1–4th graders, the program is called “I am ready”. Essentially, kids learn how to take care of themselves and become independent. They create value for themselves.

For 5–7th graders, the program is called “I am life ready”. Kids in this program learn all about daily life. In simple terms this is “Adulting”. Here kids do things that are useful for their family. We have essentially connected daily life to syllabus.

For 8–10th graders, the program is called “I am future ready”. Kids find real life problems and solve it for real. They invent products, patent, and sell their inventions online. So they are solving a small point problem for the society. We have also connected current and future careers to syllabus.

For collage students, we help students in incubate companies. They take on larger problems that are driven by a societal purpose.

Overall, this is akin to "if you want to your kids to learn to swimming, get them to pool, get them into water"... so, if you want you kids to be future ready, become independent, start now.

What's something schools in India don't teach but should? Rohith KN's answer: As parents, we send out kids to school to get them life ready and future ready. Unfortunately, school system gears up kids to get good grades and get graduation certificates. Neither suffice. Infact, grades and certificates are becoming redundant and at times a baggage.
