August 20 - the day Dr Dabholkar was assassinated - marks the National Scientific Temper Day.

On 80 years of Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombing, Prof PR Vishwanath (former scientist at TIFR and IIA) will deliver a public lecture at National College (Jayanagar), Bengaluru today.

On 80 years of , AIPSN-BGVS calls for abolishing all nuclear weapons and rebuilding a powerful people’s movement for peace, disarmament and saving lives.

Dr S Balachandra Rao (1944-2025) was a teacher, scholar, author and science communicator. In a career spanning almost four decades, Dr Rao taught mathematics at the National College, initially at Gauribidanur and later at Basavanagudi. He retired as the Principal of the National College at Basavanagudi (Bengaluru).

After his doctoral dissertation on fluid mechanics, a large part for over the next four decades Dr Rao worked on ancient Indian astronomy and mathematics. His work and collaborations led to the publication of several important books and journal articles on history of science and mathematics in ancient India, both in Kannada and in English. This body of his work has a lasting public influence and significance where he emphasised the necessity of scientific approach in critically analysing the knowledge of the past. Dr Rao was an effective public communicator of science and relentlessly advocated for scientific temper and rationality for social development.

This meeting will bring together some of the recollections of the memories and work of Dr S Balachandra Rao by eminent scientists, scholars, his collaborators and students, involving his family members, colleagues, students and admirers.

ಡಾ. ಎಸ್. ಬಾಲಚಂದ್ರ ರಾವ್ (1944-2025) ಒಬ್ಬ ಶಿಕ್ಷಕ, ವಿದ್ವಾಂಸ, ಲೇಖಕ ಮತ್ತು ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ ಸಂವಹನಕಾರರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಸುಮಾರು ನಾಲ್ಕು ದಶಕಗಳ ಕಾಲದ ವೃತ್ತಿಜೀವನದಲ್ಲಿ, ಡಾ. ರಾವ್ ಅವರು ನ್ಯಾಷನಲ್ ಕಾಲೇಜಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಗಣಿತವನ್ನು ಕಲಿಸಿದರು, ಆರಂಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಗೌರಿಬಿದನೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ತು ನಂತರ ಬಸವನಗುಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ. ಅವರು ಬಸವನಗುಡಿ (ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು) ಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ನ್ಯಾಷನಲ್ ಕಾಲೇಜಿನ ಪ್ರಾಂಶುಪಾಲರಾಗಿ ನಿವೃತ್ತರಾದರು.

ದ್ರವ ಯಂತ್ರಶಾಸ್ತ್ರದ ಕುರಿತಾದ ಅವರ ಡಾಕ್ಟರೇಟ್ ಪ್ರಬಂಧದ ನಂತರ, ಮುಂದಿನ ನಾಲ್ಕು ದಶಕಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರು ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ಭಾರತೀಯ ಖಗೋಳಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ ಮತ್ತು ಗಣಿತಶಾಸ್ತ್ರದ ಮೇಲೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡಿದರು. ಅವರ ಕೆಲಸ ಮತ್ತು ಸಹಯೋಗಗಳು ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ ಮತ್ತು ಗಣಿತಶಾಸ್ತ್ರದ ಇತಿಹಾಸದ ಕುರಿತು ಕನ್ನಡ ಮತ್ತು ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಹಲವಾರು ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಜರ್ನಲ್ ಲೇಖನಗಳ ಪ್ರಕಟಣೆಗೆ ಕಾರಣವಾಯಿತು. ಅವರ ಕೃತಿಗಳು ಶಾಶ್ವತವಾದ ಸಾರ್ವಜನಿಕ ಪ್ರಭಾವ ಮತ್ತು ಮಹತ್ವವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿವೆ, ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರು ಹಿಂದಿನ ಜ್ಞಾನವನ್ನು ವಿಮರ್ಶಾತ್ಮಕವಾಗಿ ವಿಶ್ಲೇಷಿಸುವಲ್ಲಿ ವೈಜ್ಞಾನಿಕ ವಿಧಾನದ ಅಗತ್ಯವನ್ನು ಒತ್ತಿ ಹೇಳಿದರು. ಡಾ. ರಾವ್ ಅವರು ವಿಜ್ಞಾನದ ಪರಿಣಾಮಕಾರಿ ಸಾರ್ವಜನಿಕ ಸಂವಹನಕಾರರಾಗಿದ್ದರು ಮತ್ತು ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿಗಾಗಿ ವೈಜ್ಞಾನಿಕ ಮನೋಭಾವ ಮತ್ತು ವೈಚಾರಿಕತೆಯನ್ನು ನಿರಂತರವಾಗಿ ಪ್ರತಿಪಾದಿಸಿದರು.

ಕೆಲಸದ ಕೆಲವು ನೆನಪುಗಳನ್ನು ಒಟ್ಟುಗೂಡಿಸುತ್ತದೆ, ಇದರಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಖ್ಯಾತ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನಿಗಳು, ವಿದ್ವಾಂಸರು, ಅವರ ಸಹಯೋಗಿಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳು, ಅವರ ಕುಟುಂಬ ಸದಸ್ಯರು, ಸಹೋದ್ಯೋಗಿಗಳು, ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಅಭಿಮಾನಿಗಳು ಸೇರಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ಭಾರತ ಜ್ಞಾನ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ ಸಮಿತಿ ಮತ್ತು ನ್ಯಾಷನಲ್ ಕಾಲೇಜ್

Prof S Balachandra Rao, a mathematics teacher and former Principal of the National College at Basavanagudi, passed away today morning in Bangalore. He was formerly the Director of Gandhi Centre of Science and Human Values at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan.

Prof Rao is a widely read author and scholar on mathematics, scientific thinking and rationality, and published several books on history of mathematics, and debunking astrology in Kannada and in English.

In his illustrious career as a teacher and scholar, Prof Rao foregrounded critical thinking and scholarship in elucidating history (of mathematics in particular) and engaging with science without giving in to sensationalism.

BGVS recalls the decades of fond memories of his association with BGVS and people's science movement and expresses its deep condolences to his family and kin, and his students and readers. His departure would be a dearly felt by all who work towards building a society based on the spirit of scientific enquiry, compassion and humane values.

ಗಣಿತ ಪ್ರಾಧ್ಯಾಪಕರೂ, ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಬಸವನಗುಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ನ್ಯಾಷನಲ್ ಕಾಲೇಜಿನ ಪ್ರಾಂಶುಪಾಲರೂ ಆಗಿದ್ದ ಪ್ರೊ. ಬಾಲಚಂದ್ರ ರಾವ್ ಇಂದು ಬೆಳಿಗ್ಗೆ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ತಮ್ಮ ಕೊನೆಯುಸಿರೆಳೆದರು.ಅವರು ಈ ಹಿಂದೆ ಭಾರತೀಯ ವಿದ್ಯಾ ಭವನದ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ ಮತ್ತು ಮಾನವೀಯ ಮೌಲ್ಯಗಳಿಗಾಗಿ ಗಾಂಧಿ ಕೇಂದ್ರ (Gandhi Centre of Science and Human Values) ದ ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕರಾಗಿ ಸೇವೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿದ್ದರು.

ಗಣಿತಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ ಮತ್ತು ವೈಜ್ಞಾನಿಕ ದೃಷ್ಟಿಕೋನದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಆಳವಾದ ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ನಡೆಸಿ ಅವರು ಬರೆದಿದ್ದ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳು ಜನಪ್ರಿಯವಾಗಿದ್ದವು.
ಅಲ್ಲದೇ, ಗಣಿತದ ಇತಿಹಾಸ ಮತ್ತು ಜೋತಿಷ್ಯದ ಪೊಳ್ಳುತನದ ಬಗ್ಗೆಯೂ ಅವರು ಬರೆದಿದ್ದ ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್ ಮತ್ತು ಕನ್ನಡದ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳು ಜನಮಾನಸವನ್ನು ತಲುಪಿ ವೈಜ್ಞಾನಿಕ ದೃಷ್ಟಿಕೋನವನ್ನು ಬಿತ್ತಿದ್ದವು.

ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರಾಗಿ ಮತ್ತು ವಿದ್ವಾಂಸರಾಗಿ ಮೇರು ಸಾಧನೆಗೈದಿದ್ದ ಅವರು ತಮ್ಮ ವೃತ್ತಿ ಜೀವನದುದ್ದಕ್ಕೂ ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನೂ ಪ್ರಶ್ನಿಸಿ, ವಿಮರ್ಶಿಸಿ ಮತ್ತು ಅಧ್ಯಯನಗಳನ್ನು ಕೈಗೊಳ್ಳುವ ಮೂಲಕ ಇತಿಹಾಸ (ಅದರಲ್ಲೂ ಮುಖ್ಯವಾಗಿ, ಗಣತದ ಇತಿಹಾಸ) ಹಾಗೂ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನವನ್ನು ಅತಿಶಯೋಕ್ತಿ ಮತ್ತು ನಾಟಕೀಯತೆಯಿಂದ ಕಾಪಿಡಲು ಶ್ರಮಿಸಿದರು.

ಭಾರತ ಜ್ಞಾನವಿಜ್ಞಾನ ಸಮಿತಿಯು ಅವರ ಕುಟುಂಬಕ್ಕೂ ಅವರಿಗಿದ್ದ ಅಪಾರ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿ ಮತ್ತು ಓದುಗ ಬಳಗಕ್ಕೂ ಈ ಮೂಲಕ ಸಂತಾಪ ಸೂಚಿಸಿತ್ತಾ, ಅವರ ಅಗಲಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಭರಿಸುವ ಶಕ್ತಿ ದೊರೆಯಲಿ ಎಂದು ಆಶಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ. ವೈಜ್ಞಾನಿಕ ಮನೋಭಾವ, ಕಾರುಣ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು ಮಾನವೀಯ ಮೌಲ್ಯಾಧಾರಿತ ಸಮಾಜವನ್ನು ಕಟ್ಟಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ನಿಟ್ಟಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರಮಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ಇದು ತುಂಬಲಾರದ ನಷ್ಟವೇ ಆಗಿದೆ.

ರಾತ್ರಿಯಾಕಾಶವನ್ನು ನೋಡಲು ಇದು ಪ್ರಸಕ್ತ ಕಾಲ. ಶುಕ್ರ, ಶನಿ, ಮಂಗಳ, ಗುರು ಗ್ರಹಗಳನ್ನು ಒಂದೇ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ನೋಡಬಹುದು. ಟೆಲಿಸ್ಕೋಪ್‌ ಮೂಲಕ ಯುರೇನಸ್‌, ನೆಪ್ಚೂನ್‌ ಗ್ರಹಗಳನ್ನೂ ನೋಡಬಹುದಾಗಿದೆ. ಐದಾರು ಗ್ರಹಗಳು ಒಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಕಾಣುವುದು ಬಹಳ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಲ್ಲ. ರಾತ್ರಿಯಾಕಾಶ ವೀಕ್ಷಣೆಯನ್ನು ಪ್ರೋತ್ಸಾಹಿಸುವ ಸಲುವಾಗಿ ಖಗೋಳಾಸಕ್ತರು ಈ ವಿದ್ಯಮಾನದ ಕುರಿತು ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಪ್ರಚಾರ, ಮಾಹಿತಿ ನೀಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಆಕಾಶ ನೋಡಲು ಅನೇಕರು ಆಸಕ್ತಿ ತೋರುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಕೂಡಾ. ಮೊಬೈಲ್‌ ಎಂಬ ಮಾಯೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಎಲ್ಲವೂ ಅಂಗೈ ಅರಮನೆಯಾಗಿರುವಾಗ ಮನೆಯಿಂದ ಆಚೆ ಹೋಗಿ ರಾತ್ರಿಯಾಕಾಶ ವೀಕ್ಷಣೆಗೆ ಪ್ರೇರಣೆ ನೀಡಲು ತುಸು ಹೆಚ್ಚೇ ಪ್ರಚಾರದ ಅವಶ್ಯಕತೆ ಇದೆ. ಆಚೆ-ಈಚೆಯ ಮಕ್ಕಳನ್ನು ಕರೆದುಕೊಂಡು ನೀವೂ ಈ ರಾತ್ರಿ ಹೊರಬನ್ನಿ. ಸ್ಟೆಲ್ಲೆರಿಯಮ್‌ ತರದ ಆಕಾಶ ವೀಕ್ಷಣೆಯ ಒಂದು app ಇದ್ದರೆ ಗ್ರಹಗಳನ್ನು, ರಾಶಿಪುಂಜಗಳನ್ನೂ ಗುರುತಿಸಲು ತಜ್ಞರ ಸಹಾಯವೂ ಬೇಕಾಗದು. 84 ಭೂ ವರ್ಷಗಳಿಗೊಮ್ಮೆ ಸೂರ್ಯನೊಂದು ಸುತ್ತು ಹಾಕುವ ಯುರೇನಸ್‌, ಸೂರ್ಯನಿಗೊಂದು ಸುತ್ತುಹಾಕಲು 165 ಭೂವರ್ಷಗಳನ್ನು ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ನೆಪ್ಚೂನ್‌ ಕೂಡಾ ಬರಿಗಣ್ಣಿಗೆ ಕಾಣುವ ಗ್ರಹಗಳ ಜೊತೆ ರಾತ್ರಿಯಾಕಾಶದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಣಿಸುವುದಾದ್ದರಿಂದ ಇದೊಂದು ಅಪರೂಪದ ವಿದ್ಯಮಾನವೂ ಹೌದು. ಯುರೇನಸ್, ನೆಪ್ಚೂನ್ ಗ್ರಹಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊರತುಪಡಿಸಿಯೂ ಬರಿಗಣ್ಣಿಗೆ ತೋರುವ ರಾತ್ರಿಯಾಕಾಶ ಮನಮೋಹಕವಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಅಪಾರ ಆಕಾಶದ ನಡುವೆ ಪೇಟೆ ಬೀದಿಯಂತಿರುವ ಮಹಾವ್ಯಾಧ ನಕ್ಷತ್ರ ಪುಂಜವನ್ನು ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಪರಿಚಯಿಸುತ್ತಾ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಖಗೋಳದ ಕುರಿತು ಕುತೂಹಲ ಮೂಡಿಸಬಹುದು.
