This is the question that trips up almost every Clinical Research fresher in interviews: what's the difference between an AE and an SAE? โ ๏ธ
Get it wrong on the job and it's a serious safety breach. Here's the clear version:
๐น AE (Adverse Event) โ any untoward medical event in a participant. Doesn't have to be caused by the drug. E.g. headache, nausea.
๐น SAE (Serious Adverse Event) โ an AE that leads to death, is life-threatening, needs hospitalisation, causes disability, or a birth defect.
โก The trap: 'severe' โ 'serious'. A severe headache is still just an AE. Seriousness is about the outcome โ and SAEs must usually be reported within 24 hours.
