I am again soliciting student papers for the IEEE/PES Student Prize Paper Contest. This contest, which encourages student writing in the electric power area, is open only to students in BS and MS programs or equivalent.
The annual competition is based solely on judging of written papers related to the electric power industry. The choice of suitable topics is limited by the award sponsor to the following:
* Renewable energy sources
* Alternative power generation
* High-reliability power generation, transmission, and distribution
* Energy-efficient power generation and distribution
* New technologies for power generation, transmission and distribution.
Interested students or advisers are welcome to respond by email and I will send a set of guidelines. Note, however, that we may be changing to a web-based portal for this year's contest. The deadline for our receiving papers is December 15, 2015.

IEEE Student Branch - RV College of Engineering, is conducting a 2-Day Hands-On Workshop on " Automation using PLC and SCADA " on 12-13 September 2015, from 9 am to 5 pm.
The first day would deal with the hardware aspects of PLCs using Allen Bradley PLCs. The coding as well as the communication protocols related to SCADA would be covered on the second day.
To give a quick introduction, a programmable logic controller, PLC, is a digital computer used for automation of typically industrial electromechanical processes, such as control of machinery on factory. PLCs are designed for multiple arrangements of digital and analog inputs and outputs, extended temperature ranges, immunity to electrical noise, and resistance to vibration and impact. SCADA is a system operating with coded signals over communication channels so as to provide control of remote equipment. A knowledge of PLCs and SCADA is a basic stepping stone to the world of automation.
Workshop Fee: Rs 900 for Non IEEE Members
