Flexible Food Storage System
Flexible food storage system was an internal project of Form B Design which was envisaged sometime earlier to address this issue. It is a modular system of used shipping conditioners which can be modified to the needs of a particular farmer or a community of farmers.
Considering the produce and the environment, the temperature humidity and other conditions can be modulated, so that only the appropriate technology need to be adopted for the same.
Most farmers do not want to store their produce at all. This system is for them to store it for a minimum amount of time like a week or 2 max. so that whenever there is a contingency like price drop or like what we have now-they can hold on to it.
Bear in mind that there are beautiful cooling and preservation technologies like solar refrigeration, etc. But everything comes at a cost. And here in India, farmers sometimes keep their potatoes in government run cold storage, but they do not go back and take them because they are not able to meet the costs.
Which is why it is precisely flexible. The technology, system, ownership model, etc, can be tailor made to the context.
This need not be just for the farmers. Big retail can have these system closer to their farmers. This can also be brought by the government and installed at the block level.
There is a lot more work to be done in terms of the details, like exact technology, etc.
It will be great if there is anyone who can support this project. Please share if you know of someone who could be interested. It will be a great help for the community; in tackling food waste, sustainability, remember as much as the food there is the precious water which is also being lost.
