Forensic Bioinformatics; Uncertainty to
certainty for Crime laboratories

The science of DNA testing has continued to evolve by utilizing
better robotic systems, improved DNA testing and sequencing
equipment and integrating with laboratory information
management systems (LIMS). These have combined to increase
the number of samples an analyst can process per month and
thus the overall throughput of DNA laboratories.
Complimenting the increased capacity of DNA databasing is the
increasing ability to obtain DNA profiles from crime scene
samples. The advent of touch DNA testing has been used to
obtain DNA profiles from miniscule amounts of DNA material
and such results have been accepted into the court room
setting. Such advances are altering the type of cases being
received in DNA laboratories and in some cases burglary cases
have become one of the most dominate types of cases
submitted.

In this talk, Dr. Kumar highlights the increasing impact on society
within nations that have robust DNA data-basing legislation and
testing capacity, resulting in a reduction in criminal activity and a
safer society.

Dr. Amit Kumar is the Chief Executive Officer at BioAxis DNA Research
Centre at Hyderabad. He has a PhD in Applied Bioinformatics from TCU,
Delaware and has been recognized as a ‘Pioneer in Genomic Education”.
He also has a Master’s degree in Criminology and Police Administration.
He works with Law enforcements agencies in the country on DNA
forensics. He is a widely published author and very active in the IEEE
Computational Intelligence Society. Some of his research interests are in
Forensic Bioinformatics, DNA Forensics, Reverse Vaccinology, and
Rational drug discovery. Besides his industrial experience, Amit has
adjudicated 2 PhD Thesis and currently has 4 PhD students are working
under his guidance.
