This form of punishment has been in practice in our country since the Gurukul time and was meant to be given to the students who were weak in studies.
The logic behind this punishment is that this particular posture increases the blood flow in the memory cells in the brain; synchronizes the right and left side of the brain and promotes calmness; stimulates neural pathways via acupressure points in the earlobe, sharpens intelligence and also helps those with autism, learning difficulties and behavioral problems. This posture is also performed as a form of prayer by some devotees.

Probably we have forgotten this ancient method of increasing memory power but the West is now using is very diligently and they are recommending this posture or exercise to many.

Excerpts from Sachin Tendulkar's interview in which he talks about being in 'THE ZONE'. Something children learn during the Brain Konnect workshop.
In fact, he'd like to have nothing on his mind at all--no critics, no records, absolutely nothing. When he goes out to bat, Tendulkar seeks "the zone." It's a mental state familiar to great athletes in which the mind filters out the crowd, the opponents, the score and other distractions; performance is guided by a magic combination of intuition and muscle memory. Tendulkar speaks of it in terms more spiritual than sporting: "I need to surrender myself to my natural instincts," he says. "My subconscious mind knows exactly what to do. It's been trained to react for years."
