Have you been triggered...where your emotional reaction is out of proportion to the situation.

Where do triggers come from?
How can they be handled differently?
How can we treat our triggers with love?

Being grateful for triggers, allows acknowledgement of where you are not free.

Psychodrama is an action-based approach that helps us move our clients into the heart of the matter. We explore old patterns which don't serve us any longer, which leads to greater freedom and productivity.

Varija and her coach had been trying different ways to explore her struggles at the workplace, but nothing seemed to be working.

Coach suggested Psychodrama - which made Varija apprehensive but intrigued enough to say yes.

Using empty chair, with role play, role reverse and doubling, Varija explored and connected with her deepest emotions related to the boss, the dynamic with team members, and her perception of her own role in the group. She emerged from the sessions with insights and action steps

Psychodrama is a process in which participants act out their issues in a safe environment.

This allows for deeper understanding of thoughts and behaviours, gaining new insights, freedom from ‘stuckness’, eventually leading to the courage of acceptance and action.

In Psychodrama, Doubling is when the coach speaks spontaneously as the other's inner voice to support the client. The double expresses those feelings, thoughts, wishes which they believe are felt but not expressed.

The doubling technique takes advantage of the fact that in a group situation/play, the audience often identifies the client’s feelings and conflicts, for which the client themselves have a “blind spot”; also, in doubling, the group members can offer new and enriching perspective to the client because of their different life experiences.

The client is supported in becoming aware of their own thoughts and feelings and is offered the support of being understood.

“The circle opens, but the work goes on.”

Heart open, mind at rest, soul nourished...in our In-person psychodrama training workshop that took place last weekend. It was about identifying the self with an interpersonal or intrapersonal context to work with and get to action into the psychodramatic space. The embodiment of the role in the specific and varying time and space fabric lead to prolific unfolding and unknotting of the self and the others.

As I bend to enter the cab, I am struck by the cleanliness and compliment Wasim (driver) on the well maintained vehicle.
Wasim smiles widely and thanks me. As he helps me with my bags, he shares about sanitizing the car every morning, the fragrance he uses and asks me to help myself to water and magazines.

I respond, ‘’Wasim bhai, I hear you say, ‘My car is a reflection of the pride I have in my work’.

In the next 20 minutes I learn about Wasim’s work ethic, his perspective on the dignity of labor, the importance of hygiene even when COVID restrictions are lifted, the cab company’s incentive system and of course about his family back home. We finish the ride with Wasim offering to drive me anytime in his off-duty hours.

A week later I had to pickup a friend from the airport very late at night, when cabs are not easily available. I called Wasim and made the trip comfortably.

All started with a little doubling
‘’Wasim bhai, I hear you say, ‘My car is a reflection of the pride I have in my work’.’’

In Psychodrama, Doubling is when the coach speaks spontaneously as the other's inner voice to support the client.

Different types of doubling statements can support the client feel understood. It creates space to get ‘unstuck’, get clarity, become aware of ‘blind spots’ and open up to exploring unexplored parts of themselves.

What does TRANSFORMATION really mean?

One way is to travel through 5 layers of consciousness:

First layer: What I let everyone in the world know – or the persona as Carl Jung called it.

Second layer: What I know about myself, but tell only to my therapist, or write in my journal, or tell a close friend.

Third layer: What occurs to me, but I don’t want to pay attention to it, or what we disown- the pre-conscious.

Fourth layer: Sometimes I have unworthy thoughts, but I can’t even admit it to myself, or repress it - the shadow or unconscious.

Fifth layer: Something which has never even occurred to me. Such as buried potential within me; or new possibilities of the future.

Psychodrama is a powerful process to enable you to make this journey.

In Psychodrama, Coaches, Counsellors and HR Consultants learn the method of coaching with the Empty Chair.

While more commonly used in Gestalt therapy, What is less known that Frederick Perls, its founder was once a student of JL Moreno (who created Psychodrama), and borrowed the Empty Chair method from Moreno.

Instead of talking ABOUT her problems (say with her boss), the protagonist talks TO her boss in the empty chair.

Talking TO that embodied space brings a distinct opportunity to enter and root in the here-and-now moment. It also gives the opportunity for the protagonist to ‘role-reverse’ with the other’s perspective by changing chairs if appropriate.

The coach can enrich the moment by using the doubling, mirroring and role-interview techniques as well.
