PMP Certification | Project Management Institute The Project Management Professional (PMP)® Certification from PMI is an acclaimed industry-recognized certification for project managers. Get started here!

06/01/2021

Hi all! I just need a space to share- I passed the new PMP exam, first try! Also got above Target in all three domains! I wanted to share some take always on the new exam before I forgot them to hopefully help someone else studying for the new exam.

1. My exam questions were about 85% agile topics. I received ZERO questions on float. Maybe 3 questions total on SPI/CPI. This is an agile exam. Throw your old PMP study books away.

2. I had no formulas to calculate. I did not need the calculator or the whiteboard.

3. Understand SCRUM framework inside and out and how to work with a product owner. I am a professional scrum master as well and I can tell you the PMP content was extremely similar to what you would see on the PSM.

4. The focus on ITTOs is minimal. Focus on understanding the most popular agile frameworks and how they could apply to different situations. XP programming/ Lean Six Sigma / Scrum/Design Thinking etc.

5. The “people” questions were still very traditional PMP, but bundled in an agile scenario. Tuckerman’s latter showed up several times and so did leadership style.

6. THERE ARE ALOT OF “SELECT TWO” type questions which was tricky. You will need to understand every single step in a scrum framework. Backlog grooming/ refinement/ sprint ceremonies/ retrospectives/ reviews/ etc.

7. There are a lot of matching questions. Which step on the left corresponds to how a backlog should be prioritized on the right.

8. To study, I took approximately 2,000 practice questions between the PMP Similator and Pocket Prep. I’d also mention I already have my CAPM and PSM (scrum master).

9. Be prepared to understand how hybrid projects work and agile transformations for organizations who have traditionally been predictive.

I hope that helps! Thanks for letting me share! Happy studying!

Advice to PMP Aspirants:

1:Did you understand all the ITTO? What are their INPUT AND OUTPUTS. For each input and output you have to know 3 things where they come from where they go and why. You will have to cut and past from PMBOK each process group (the page where it show the flow of information). You cannot cram ITTO.
2. Rita simulator exam are good. Focus of each small question and wording (this is a must). Most students having done the stimulation just quickly answer the question since they know the answer.
Simulation software are a good source to fillin the knowledge gap.
3. Read the PMBOK glossary its a must.
4. Also get andy crowe pmp book its a easy narrative of pmbok.
5.Do at least 3 to 4 mock exam so you can get the feel of real exam.
6.In the real exam donot mark recheck for more than 10 questions.
7.No Need to sigup for other simulation exam unless they are free.

Success story:
Hey folks, I cleared my PMP exam yesterday in 1st attempt. Just wanted to share my study routine and exam experience with everyone.
- I planned my PMP certification journey in a compact and rigorous 8 week time period.
- Invested ~7 hours on a daily basis.
- Enrolled myself in Simplilearn Live classes
- Started off with Live classes (total 36 hours) on virtual platform.
- Simultaneously, I started working on my PMP application.
- When classes were over, I was almost ready to submit my PMP application.
- Before starting my self study, I completed the whole application process
- For self study, I relied on
- Simplilearn material
- Rita Mulcahy (9th edition) - cover to cover
- PMBOK (6th edition) - used as a ref guide
- Online ExamsPM videos
- PMP Exam Mentor app
- For exam preparation, I used
- Simplilearn Simulation Tests
- PMP prepcast Mocks
- Rita Mulcahy exercises
- Projectmanagement.com (PM challenge)
- PMP Exam Mentor app
- Few youtube videos on how to answer PMP ques to help me align my thought process to PMI way
- Writing and re-writing key words helped me remember important points / definitions
- Test Strategies:
- I started off scoring ~60% in my mock tests.
- When i was achieving more than 75% consistently, I scheduled my exam.
- I was scoring around 80-85% in my last 3 simulation tests.
- Overall, I answered c3000 ques
- I checked the time slots available in my exam centre. I tried taking my simulation tests in same time slots to assess my performance and alertness. And accordingly, scheduled my exam in that slot.
- No new material or test in the last 24hours leading upto exam
- Assimilated all the info in my brain in those 24 hours and practiced writing down 49 process grid and all formulae in shortest time possible
- During exam:
- Invested initial 7 min in brain dump (writing down the 49 process grid and all formulae) in the scratch sheet provided by centre
- After every 50 ques, 1 min pause to do some stretching exercises and rest my eyes
- Finished my exam with 20 min to spare
- Reviewed marked ques and few other ques in those 20 min
- Submitted exam with 1 min to spare
- Must say, all the efforts were worth it when the result appeared on screen

One helluva journey and a great learning experience. Wishing everyone all the best in their efforts and hoping to see you all clear your exam very soon.

PMP Exam Questions Updated on June 2018 for PMBOK 6th Edition (Part 2) 18/02/2019

Hi Folks,

As I posted on 13-Feb-2019 that I passed my PMP exam, here I gonna share my lessons learned.

FIRST CHALLENGE: FINDING OUT STUDY TIME
WHAT I DID:

The first and foremost challenge for any working person is to find out time to prepare for the tiresome exam. What I did, everyday after returning from office I used to take a powernap for about half an hour which rejuvenated me for concentrating on my study. I tried to study during evening 2 to 3 hours although it was not possible everyday to do so since I have many more social and FnF obligations (I think everyone has so). Thus, I took me 4 months to prepare for the exam.

MANDATORY 35 HOURS COURSE:

I took the 35 hours mandatory course through online from ExamsPM. I went though each process area and as soon as I finished each knowledge area, I studied the corresponding chapter in PMBOK. I took notes in my own languages for each relevant concept. Thus, it became very easy for me to revise afterwards. Then finishing each knowledge area, I attempted for the chapter end quizzes. And tried to critically analyze why the particular answer is correct/ incorrect.

RESOURCES I USED:

• To me the most important resource is PMBOK. Although it’s too tedious to study, at least for the first time. But reading this cover by cover has paid me off. I also skimmed though Rita’s book too. As mentioned above, I took notes of all relevant concepts in my own language. I revised PMBOK twice after the first reading just using my own notes.

• I took one full time simulation from ExamsPM to check my timing for the exam. I got 77% on that exam. I solved all chapter end quizzes of Rita’s book and corrected 65% to 75%. (Not the Fast trac of Rita).

• I am sharing the links of the 2 videos; these were extremely useful. These guided me how should think to answer to the questions in PMP exam.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T2NaT8fveEA&list=PLnLfwOS4YH-0ClQCQjSg0eZWQfE-uR8aB

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAR8Ox7jvjo&list=PLnLfwOS4YH-0qNVBm7H4aM9_VAnP4zTU5

• I printed the ITTOs of the 49 processes with definitions and key benefits of all the processes. These helped me to view / connect/correlate all the ITTOs and revise just before the exam.

• I used couple of apps (PMP Exam Mentor, ExamMobile: PMP, PMP PMBOK6 PMSUGURU AI) to read while commuting to/from office.

• I kept the pictures of page number – 26 (1.2.4.7), 436 (11.4.3.1), 155 (table-5-1), 476 (12.1.3.2), 406 (Figure- 11-4), 481 (table- 12-1), 48 (2.4.4.3), 47 (table-2-1), 9 (table-1-1), 25 (table-1-4) in my mobile gallery, and read almost regularly to memorise thoroughly. I believe it helped me lot to answer many questions during exam.

• I regularly followed couple of FB study groups, including this one for sure. The discussions of the groups helped to gauge the idea generating process to solve the puzzle (PMP exam questions are indeed puzzles).

EXAM EXPERIENCE

• I should say that to me PMP exam is not an easy one. I think I was 100% about the answers for only about 15% to 20% of questions. For the rest, I had to make choice between 2/3 options. The questions may seem easy, but answers options are confusing, in most cases deceiving.
• Questions size are not very long (2 to 3 lines in most cases)
• The exam covers all the processes and almost touches all the topics. But if you ask me from where I got highest questions, I would say “Perform Integrated Change Control”.
• 95% questions are contextual-described the situation, and then asked what to do next/ what to do first/ as a project manger, what should you do/ what is the best option in this situation.
• 1 question of critical path, 4 to 5 EVM related questions, not much difficult.
• To me it appeared that knowing each tool is the most important to answer to the question. Even if you can’t recall the definition, you must know very precisely when to use which tool and when not; which one is better than the other. Thus, try to realize the usages of each tool, and learn to distinguish among the tools which may seem similar to you.
• I think some topics are not covered in PMBOK-6th edition; like rule of 7 for control chart. But I found question regarding this topic. I saw couple to videos to clear my ideas (following links)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXaMq2trk18
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUJsqEHRcJA

There were few mores, but I forgot the links. But where ever you find it difficult, google it or find in youtube. This will help to clear your concepts.

• I got few questions related to agile concepts.
• I did brain dump at the begging of the exam for the 24-planning process and EAC and TCPI formula. I think writing the processes were not required, but EAC and TCPI formula helped to quickly answer the EVM questions at the fag end when my brain’s performance was deteriorating.

• I didn’t take any break during the 4 hours exam.
• When I clicked the submit button, I was not sure what I was going to see- extremely nervous. But when I saw the word “Congratulations”, I can hardly explain the feelings at that moment!!

FINAL NOTE:

There is no single recipe for PMP exam. Everyone has his/her own study approach. But the most valuable advice from my experience I can give is that ‘focus on the basic i.e. study the PMBOK thoroughly’. It’s not all about solving 1000 to 2000 questions, knowing how to solve and analyze the questions is vital. Before appearing for the exam, I made myself assured that I know all the concepts (not trying to memorize the ITTOs). Best wishes for all the PMP aspirants.

I find it better than going through the whole book.

PMBOK® Guide Sixth Edition Summarized PDF Download a Summary for The Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK 6th Edition), it helps more people interested to get a Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification.

03/02/2019

I passed the PMP exam with 4 above target and one target (initiation). Here is my lesson learned and the strategy I used to study for the exam as well as the strategy I used during the exam

# # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # #
The exam was difficult but fair. Most questions were a few lines long
# # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # #

Limit your study material to the following:

1- PMBOK - to test your PMBOK knowledge take Scordo Tests and solve PMBOK Q&A tests
2- Rita - Very important for situational questions. Save the practice exam for the 2nd pass.
3- Mock exams. I used PM Study Circle (2 exams), Oliver (2 exam), HF (1 Exam). My score was 79% to 82%. Exam central is recommended by other PMPs.
4- Summary ITTO description : Familiarize yourself with the contents of project documents, plans AND tools & techniques
5- If necessary, youtube videos to explain topics that you find difficult and to understand the subtle differences between some of the similar tools&techniques and some of the similar processes

# # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # #
Learning strategy:
# # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # #

- Understand the high level concept of all the processes

Do the following steps for each process

- Begin with end/goal in mind. The goal of each process is its main output, so know the main output of the process & ignore input, tools and techniques for now.
- Once you know the output of the process in details (Summary ITTO description), study the tools and techniques of the process. Have a general understanding of the tool and techniques of the process and then answer these two questions: - How can this TT help us produce the output of this process? - What documents do we need as an input to this TT (focus on the main input)?
- This step should be easy. Now, you need to review the input of the process.

PMBOK:
Many questions come directly from PMBOK. These questions have possibly many "correct" answers. However, in order to answer them CORRECTLY and QUICKLY, you have to rely on your memory. Note, you don't need to memorize the PMBOK :). However, if you read the PMBOK twice you will KNOW the "correct" choice (even though you know that all other answers are possibly correct and may be even better answers)

Rita helps you in many ways:
1- It helps you with the situational questions: It reduces the subjectivity nature of the situational PMP questions by giving you an "objective" thought process to follow when answering the situational (see my modified version of the process below - Feel free to modify it based on your experience)
2- It connects every KA to almost all other KAs. For example, after reading Rita once, when you hear the word Risk, you think not only about the identified risks, but also about all other sources of risks which include uncertainties of cost estimates, duration estimates, resouce availability. Now you are thinking about cost KA, schedle KA, resource KA, and so on.
3- Change is a major topic in the exam, so having an objective process to follow when answering the change questions is a great help. Rita gives you that objective process (see below)
4- The "tricks of the trade" helped me answer a few questions too

Types of questions I encountered during the exam:

1- What should you do? The general direction of your action
2- What should you do NEXT? (the immediate action that you shoud take)
When you see more than one "correct" answers, read the question again and see whether the question is asking about the next immediate step or the next general/major step/action.
3- What document should you refer to to find this info?
4- What should have you done or what could have helped you to prevent this from happening (it could be a document, tool & techniques, or an action that you could have taken)? (retrospective)
5- A few easy to mid-level ITTO quesitons.
6- Two simple Critical path questions.
7- Three tricky EVM calculation questions (not too tricky though).
8- A few facts questions.

Notes about my exam:
All questions were from topics/areas covered in the PMBOK
No questions on the following:
Agile, Ethics, PM Foundation (Ch 1,2,3)

General Thought Process I used:

Read the questions carefully to figure out which step has been performed. The next step that you should take is going to be the following step in this process. Avoid jumping a step unless the following step is not listed as a choice in the question (in that case choose the closest choice to the following step):

1- Identify the issue OR receive a request from a stakeholder (informal request)

2- Collect more information from the appropriate person/group to understand the issue/request (so you can do the next step)

3- Do impact analysis (this is an initial impact analysis. It is a quick one)

4- Develop options to fix the issue (it can be done by the PM alone or with the help of his/her team)

5- Now that you know your options you will either:
- Select the best option if you know which option is the best option based on the info provided in the question. (don't implement it yet)
- Or consult with the sponsor by providing him/her the options and asking him/her "Which option should I go with?" (don't implement it yet)

Note: Consulting with the customer is rarely the correct answer and should be your last resort. You should always try to fix the issue internally before you go to the customer

6- If the above steps have been performed and the option you chose involves making a change to a controlled document, a change must be documented

Steps 7 - 10 comprises the Perfrom Integrated Change Control Process

7- Submit a change request & update the change log with the change request details

8- CCB Performs additional impact analysis

9- CCB approves, rejects or defer the change request

10- The Plans, baselines, and docs (including the change log) are updated and the decision is communicated to stakeholders

11- Implement the approved change request (Direct and Manage Project Work Process)

12- In some cases, you need to confirm the successful implementation of the approved change request (Control Quality Process)

General Problem Solving Process I used:

- Define the Problem (similar to steps 1&2 above)
- Generate Solutions / Identify alternatives (similar to steps 3&4 above)
- Pick the best solution (similar to step 5 above)
- Implement the solution (similar to step 11 above)
- Confirm that the issue is fixed as a result of the previous step (similar to step 12)

General exam strategy I used:

- Divide the exam into 4 sub-exams and set a target to solve 50 questions (sub-exam) per hour.
- When checking the elapsed time in each sub-exam, focus on minutes only. Try to average 1 minute per question and then leave the last 10 minutes in the sub-exam for answering the skipped questions and reviewing the marked-for-review questions.
- Make sure you don't spend more than 1 hour in each sub-exam. If you do that you will lose track of time and this technique will not work for you (the technique of focusing on minutes only)
- Again, don't leave the skipped questions unanswered until the end of the exam (you might run out of time). You can leave the unanswered questions until the end of the sub-exam only. You can leave the marked-for-review questions until the end of the exam if your sub-exam time is over. I personally recommend leaving the marked-for-review questions until the end of the exam in ALL CASES. Usually the first answer is the correct one. I personally don't change an answer unless I have an objective reason to do so (for example, I didn't notice a phrase in the choice I selected)
- Keep in mind: Knowing how well/bad you are doing time-wise pressures your brain to think quickly and to operate more effectively and efficiently during the exam.
- Don't expect yourself to be 100% sure of your answers. That is ok you can get many questions wrong and still pass. So don't spend too much time making sure your answer is correct. Move on and get PMP certified !!!
