The Theory of Constraints (TOC) is a management philosophy focusing on continuous improvement process. The central idea of TOC lies in the identification and exploitation of the system constraint in improving a system. TOC is based on the assumption that the performance of a system is determined by the system constraint, which is anything that blocks the system from accomplishing its stated goal, or in achieving a higher level of performance with respect to this goal. As the first step in improving a system, managers need to determine what constrains the system from reaching its goal.
Shridhar explains how simple it is to apply the process of TOC. The improvement process focuses on three questions: What to change? What to change to? How to cause change? These three questions must be answered in sequence to make the improvement process effective. As you read on, you get the impression how we missed the art of simple thinking.
As a matter of fact, the improvement in performance of a manufacturing system, comprising a number of interconnected subsystems, at any time is dictated not by each and every subsystem, rather by one or just a few. What it means in real life situations is that a system can be improved at a given time, by influencing performance of just a few blocks and it is futile to improve all the building blocks of the system.

TOC lecture programme went off very well. The book "Manufacturing Competitiveness - the TOC Way" was released by Shri T Sudhakar Pai and was received first by Shri O P Khanna, in the presence of the author Dr Shridhar Lolla.
The current Indian Economic scenario is not a bright one, with hopes of high growth rates plummeting to an all time low. All along the Service sector has been pushing up the growth contributing over 50% of the share to our GDP.
But it is my humble opinion that a sustained national growth can only come from manufacturing. Today the contribution of the manufacturing sector to Indian GDP is a meagre 16%, far less than in China, Brazil or Russia.
So, The spirit behind constituting the National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council (NMCC), headed by Shri V. Krishnamurthy, is a lofty one - to perk up manufacturing from grass root level - mainly the MSMEs. Most MSMEs in India are beset with fire-fighting for their survival. In the bargain, they lose sight of opportunities for becoming competitive (innovative thinking) in the global arena.
It is certainly the prime duty of Institutions like ours to hand-hold them through a dedicated programme for re-inventing their hidden potential.
Our first initiative is the Manufacturing Competitiveness Lecture Series. From here, we plan to help MSMEs who come forward, to study their operations and lead them through the productivity path with minimal investments. The NMCC can help them through funds required for this transformation.
I need your active participation, and please express your views openly here.
Cheers ........ RC
