Debased education system
by AAMIR HUSSAIN SHAH
Look into our educational set-up, it is all rotten
within. Wedded to the interests of the Capital it is
anything but education. Parents are viewing their
kids as investment entities. Right from day one,
they are forced to enter a competitive world
without actually knowing that competition doesn’t
build character. Turning education into a race
means that we have more losers than winners.
The involvement of money on large scale in
education is producing fewer students and more
rowdies. Most students graduate without broad
integrated sense of the unity of things. It is
commonly felt that maximum damage occurs to
students after they come out of the schools and
enter under-graduate courses (occasionally even at
+2 level). It is at this stage that all enthusiasm,
self-confidence and eagerness are killed.
A student is surrounded by the feelings of
insecurity and pessimism. This is often justified
using an old fixation that education must
guarantee jobs. It may be so, but it must also
create a community capable of generating its own
livelihood.
Perhaps our colleges and universities have
forgotten that they are there not to make careers
but to make minds. Higher level teaching continues
to remain divorced from research and self-inquisitiv
eness. Our colleges are generally underequipped,
over-crowded and poorly staffed. In most of the
colleges one finds low educational standards and
poor academic environment. The poor methods of
evaluation and debilitating memory based
examining system add more to the existing
problems of education.
The failures are time and again allowed to be a part
of exam game. Most of them remain unable to
prove their worth. Some qualify by fraudulent
means (giving boost to copying and cheating) and
some are even left to su***de.
The process of examining failures is another
parasitic industry. From teachers to clerks and
banks to other sponsored agencies, all are
benefitted. The one who is at the receiving end is a
common student. But who cares? The institutions
of learning no more qualify to be viewed as
institutions of education but mostly business/
career. All the ethics of learning are ravaged there.
So many seminars and symposia are organised but
hardly any intellectual debate strikes the audience
or dictate policies. It is left to judiciary and political
authorities to determine directions open to society.
One also finds a caste system like situation
prevailing in our education. Science students are
viewed as special ones while as other than science
students (especially arts and humanities ones) may
be treated as untouchables.
I don’t know whether most of the students opt for
science to guarantee their jobs or for fashion, but I
know one thing that ours continues to be a science
illiterate society even after having so many science
students. It requires an enormous intellect to
compose an insightful poem or writing great music.
Doing great art is just as much of a challenge as
solving any math problem. Similarly, history is not
the game of dates and tale of kings but an
enlightening experience. But kudos to all those who
make such discriminations.
It is often said that when ignorance becomes
knowledge, fools become scholars. Higher
education is turning out to be a ticket to economic
stability rather than an opportunity to grow
intellectually. Many students with incredible
potential succumb to the fad of careerism and
choose the path of security. Our education system
emphasizes more on theories and less on values. It
doesn’t cultivate vision, ideology, aesthetic and
spiritual sensitivity. Neither has it helped to
encourage generosity and compassion.
One is truly inconsolable over the ludicrous state of
modern students. Obsession of social networking
sites, whammy thoughts and weak impressionable
psyche and allergy with books is what reflects the
dismal picture of education system. Our learning
institutions lack a healthy sports culture where
every student could be a party to it.
The goal of education is not mastery of subject
matter but development of personality. How many
graduates and post graduates have the ability of
critical thinking? How many PhD scholars come up
with new and visionary ideas?
The abdication of teacher from his role where he
was required to participate more actively and
creatively is largely responsible for the sorry state of
affairs. Instead of utilising our time in a more
productive way, we fell prey to ordinary lecture
courses that tend to induce passivity. Perhaps a
true student would never prefer to sit in a class and
be a spectator of one hour teaching show."

"Tum ho, pass mere, saath mere ho tum yun, jitna mehsus karu tumko, utna hi pa bhi loon..
Tum ho, mere liye, mere liye ho tum yun, khudko mein har gaya tumko, tumko mein jeeta hun..
Kahin se, kahin ko bhi, aao bewaja chale,
poochlena kisise hum mile,
andhishe naa rahi, koi baatein, tum ho..
Tum ho pass mere, saath mere ho tum yun, jitna mehsus karun tumko utna hi pa bhi loon..
Kis tarah, chinega., mujhse yeh jahan tumhe,
