Karnataka child rights panel to help rehabilitate Lambani kids in Goa
The Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KCPCR) is putting all efforts to bring the Lambani community children residing in Goa into mainstream society.
Following the Goa government’s eviction order to shift Lambani/Banjara families out of Goa citing the reason that they are involved in illegal activities and disrupting the
Earlier, Goa Tourism Minister Manohar Ajagaonkar had remarked that ‘Banjaras are involved in trade of narcotics and prostitution through massage parlours. They are spoiling the culture of Goa.’
According to the commission’s preliminary report, there are over 1,500 children in Goa belonging to Lambani/Banjara communities. The report also says, “Tagging a community which is coming out of the stigma of the Criminal Tribes Act is an offence. Besides, there is also a threat to life of these people to live with dignity (as per Article 21 of the Constitution).”
According to the report, most of the Banjaras settled in Goa are from northern districts of Karnataka, especially from Bagalkot, Vijayapura and Gadag, in search of employment.
Now, Brahmagiri sanctuary in Karnataka too is eco-sensitive zone
The Centre has notified the Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary in Kodagu district as an Eco Sensitive Zone (ESZ) .The region, which includes the entire forest areas of Brahmagiri Ghat and Urti reserve forests, was declared a sanctuary in 1974.

GST impact: Auction of coins, stamps on hold

Higher tax rate forces auctioneers to wait and watch at least till August; Indian Numismatic Association seeks exemption for antique coins
While Bengaluru saw its last auction in February this year, the next auction will not be held before August. Similarly, other auction houses, mostly in Mumbai, have put on hold their auctions indefinitely, industry sources confirmed. There are six ASI-licensed auction houses in the country that are authorised to auction rare coins.
“Philately and numismatics have been all along seen as a hobby, which is pursued by all sections of the society. These also help save the country’s history and heritage, and making these hobbies expensive by higher taxes is not fair,”
Auctions had been put on hold because of lack of clarity on tax rate. There was a rumour that coins and stamps would fall in ‘other’ category that would attract 28% tax. However, now the category has been defined as numismatics and philately chargeable at the rate of 12%.”

Awareness programme on prevention of child marriage from June 1 to 7
In the wake of an increase in incidents of child marriage reported in the district in recent times, the district administration, in association with the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights and District Legal Services Authority, will organise an awareness campaign from June 1 to 7.

Income norms for anna bhagya scheme
The Cabinet approved income norms for its flagship Anna Bhagya scheme. It ratified free distribution of 7 kg of foodgrains per person, fixing the income limit at ₹1.2 lakh a year for a family for distribution of ration cards under the Below Poverty Line category.
Report on promotions for SC/ST communities accepted
The State Cabinet accepted a government committee report on a case related to the Supreme Court quashing of reservation for SC and ST community members in promotion in government service.
The report will be used to strengthen the argument in the Supreme Court defending the reservation.
The government has filed a review petition in the apex court against the order striking down the promotions awarded for employees from SC/ST communities since 1978.
