Namita has long been a very active and impactful presence in the debating space. With his expericence coaching kids and representing his country Nepal on the World's stage, Srijan brings to debating heart and patience.
With carefully thought out responses and meticulously build cases, we know he will bring the true spirit of debating to MSRMPD XI

Here's what Srijan had to say when we asked him about how it's like to coach school kids?

Teaching kids to think is the easiest and the most difficult job. These most creative thinkers of the world start with no direction, have arguments yet no structure and aggression but no strategy and control. Thus, in my experience - the critical knowledge for a coach has been to know when to teach kids to stop or start thinking.

One thing is for sure - Whenever I try to teach them habits so they can be motivated to practice better they end up inspiring me instead.

Kids always want to win but their perception of victory is the next debate or the next big tournament. My approach with coaching is to send them back and win the debates they lost first. Because we have more information and control of the past debates and their arguments. This means- its fun and useful to try to coach defeats and reflections.

Debate might leave you in an intellectually better place - but simultaneously can emotionally cripple you. So, my coaching for the kids is also a preparation for handling emotions during defeats and develop a love towards experimentation, experiences and learning which will happen regardless of results.

1) If you were to give advice to yourself from when you started what would it be?
I would tell myself that don’t forget why you started this activity, it’s because you genuinely liked it. When you start winning & achieving good things, the pressure increases and you look at the results only and fall out of love with the art. Don’t let that happen!

2) Which achievement of yours is close to home and why?
It was when Team Bangladesh broke in WSDC Croatia after almost 16 years. Reason why it’s the most precious is because I failed as a debater to break in WSDC by a close margin and in my head I always replay the round against Turkey where we messed up and threw away the break. Took a silent vow to get Bangladesh a break at WSDC in whatever capacity I can. So yes that was pretty special. Also the fact that I was on a flight to Croatia when they broke and got off the plane to get the good news also makes it a good story to tell.
