What if the most powerful learning moments for your child don’t come from a screen at all?

In a world where screens are everywhere, the early years call for something different, real experiences, movement, and meaningful connection.

In this blog, we explore how screen time shapes young children’s development and why finding the right balance matters. You’ll also discover simple, practical ways to create screen-free moments at home, through play, conversations, and everyday interactions that truly count.

Because in these formative years, children don’t need more stimulation; they need time to explore, connect, and grow.

As part of our Unit of Inquiry “Sharing the Planet,” our toddlers (2–3 years) stepped into the role of young inquirers, exploring what it means to be living and how we care for the world around us 🌱

Through hands-on experiences, the children discovered that tiny seeds can grow into plants, while other materials do not, sparking early understandings of living and non-living things. They carefully observed real plants, shared what they noticed, and began to make sense of the journey from seed to plant.

A gentle nature walk, paired with magnifying glasses, invited them to slow down, look closely, and wonder. These moments encouraged them to ask questions, express their ideas, and build connections with the natural world, an important step in nurturing their identity as inquirers and thinkers.

Through conversation, exploration, and shared discovery, the children demonstrated growing confidence as communicators, using words, gestures, and expressions to make their thinking visible. Their excitement and curiosity reflected the heart of the IB approach, learning that is meaningful, joyful, and rooted in real experiences.

Experiences like these deepen children’s understanding of their relationship with the environment, fostering a sense of care and responsibility from an early age. At Kai, we continue to create spaces where curiosity is honoured, questions are celebrated, and learning unfolds naturally through play and exploration.

Our Summer Camp came to a beautiful close, and what a week it has been! From exploring emotions and discovering the wonders inside our bodies to creating music, art, and meaningful connections, our children truly experienced learning in its most joyful form.

Moments like painting with music, making their own instruments, reflecting on feelings, and coming together to create our Wonder Wall made this journey special. Even our little ones brought nature and creativity together through leaf painting, turning simple leaves into a stunning collective thoran.

A week full of curiosity, expression, and confidence, and memories we will hold close.

Today we celebrated Earth Day in the most meaningful way, with curious minds, little hands, and big hearts.
Our space came alive with conversations, creativity, and care for the planet.

We began by exploring why Earth Day matters. The children shared thoughtful ideas, keeping our surroundings clean, protecting animals, and watering plants. It was wonderful to see them express themselves with such confidence and awareness.

The learning continued through hands-on experiences:
🎨 Children created beautiful Earth art using blue and green paint, while sharing their promises to care for our planet.
🌱 They planted fenugreek and coriander seeds, understanding how small actions help life grow.
🍃 During a nature scavenger hunt, they explored, collected, and sorted natural treasures—building observation and thinking skills.
☀️ They also made vibrant Earth suncatchers, celebrating the beauty of our world through art.

What stood out most was not just the activities, but the thinking behind them. Children are already showing empathy, responsibility, and a real connection to nature. Small hands. Big impact. This is where care for the Earth truly begins.

As part of our Unit of Inquiry, “Living Things Depend on Their Habitats,” our Pre-K children (3–4 years) explored different habitats, with a focus on aquatic life.

They sorted animals into habitats and discussed underwater animals like fish, octopus, and whales, understanding that living things need the right environment to survive.

By creating their own aquatic habitat model, children explored how animals live, move, and depend on water, while strengthening their observation, thinking, and fine motor skills.

This learning helps children begin to understand the relationship between living things and their environment, building early awareness of care and responsibility for the natural world.

Learning with meaning. Learning that connects.

Week 1 of our Summer Camp has begun, and what a joyful, curiosity-filled start it has been!

This week, children explored the magic of light, shadows, water, and movement through hands-on experiences that sparked wonder and excitement.

From experimenting with light and creating their own shadow stories to noticing how shadows change across spaces, every moment invited thinking and discovery. Water play, bubbles, and simple experiments brought laughter, surprise, and endless joy.

Through building with loose parts, creating, and collaborating with peers, children shared ideas, worked together, and expressed themselves with growing confidence.

It has been truly special to watch their curiosity come alive, their creativity shine, and their joy unfold through play.

We can’t wait to see what Week 2 brings as our little explorers continue to create, discover, and thrive.

🌍 World Art Day | At Kai Early Years

Art, for us, is not an activity. It is a language.
In the early years, children don’t always have the words to express what they feel, wonder, or imagine. But give them colour, texture, and space, and they begin to tell you everything.

At Kai, we see art as a way for children to:
✨ express freely, without fear of right or wrong
✨ make sense of their world
✨ connect with others and feel a sense of belonging

It is not about perfect outcomes or finished products.
It is about the process, the thinking, the exploration, the joy.

This World Art Day, we celebrate every scribble, every splash, every mark, because each one carries a child’s voice.

As part of their Unit of Inquiry “How We Organize Ourselves,” our Toddlers (Ages 2–3 years) explored the idea that modes of transport vary based on environment and needs.

Our spaces transformed into an airport experience, where the children moved through different stages, security checks, boarding passes, baggage, and boarding a plane. They sat in the aircraft, “flew” across cities, and interacted with the air hostess, pilot, and ground staff.

This experience helped children connect what they see in the real world. It was wonderful to see their excitement, curiosity, and growing confidence as they explored each part of the journey.

Moments like these reflect how children learn at Kai, through hands-on experiences, real-world connections, and meaningful play.

Our Toddlers (2–3 years) are currently exploring the unit 'Sharing the Planet', with the central idea: Living things have needs.

As part of this learning journey, we hosted a special Pet Week, where children brought their pets to school, creating a warm and engaging learning experience.

The children observed their furry friends with curiosity and excitement. Our parent volunteers shared simple, age-appropriate insights about their pets, their needs, how they grow, what they eat, and how to care for them.

At the toddler stage, children learn best through listening, observing, and real-life experiences. Hearing directly from parents helped them begin to understand that living things need food, care, and love to grow. It also nurtures early empathy and awareness in a meaningful and gentle way.

A beautiful week of connection, curiosity, and first understandings of the world around them.
