Breaking New Grounds : He made a video for his music album himself. He played the instruments himself. He designed the cover of his music CD himself. And he even created a new sub genre of music not heard in Bangalore, or the country as such. Twenty-two-year-old Sunil Raghunath Bharadwaj is currently ‘living his dream’ as he puts it.
On October 6, he plans to officially launch his first ever Extended Play (EP), ‘In My Dreams’, in which he has invested more than Rs 20,000. An EP is a musical recording which contains more music than a single but is too short to qualify as a full album or long playing microgroove record (LP).
“While my college mates went partying and enjoyed their college life, I focussed on music and set deadlines for myself. I overshot them many times but I was determined to get this EP out,” says Sunil, a graduate in BBM from Jain University : Center for Management Studies.
Working on visual effects and videos for various events and companies, he saved a bit each month so that he could use it to release the album. The genre, new to the music scene, is termed by him as ‘Stoner Lullaby’ — music which falls under the ‘metal’ sphere which Bangaloreans love but one that can put people to sleep.
He plans to get a few gigs across pubs in the City. Will his performance also be single-handed? Of course. Using loops of beats he has already recorded from a music player, he will play the guitar and when needed, he will also switch between the piano and guitar, one after another. This, by keeping both instruments at a hand’s reach.
On what he wishes to achieve in life, he says, “I am not here to make a huge business, money and go commercial. I want people to know that there is a guy called Sunil and he plays music that is not heard before.” In fact, none of the 600 copies that Sunil plans to release of his first album, will be sold. “Anybody can get a free copy. I will distribute it at various events and places where I believe people will enjoy this music.”
He plans to release his next album which will be exactly opposite of his current ‘soothing’ music. Interestingly, he has never attended any guitar or piano classes. And he plays a right-handed guitar with his left hand.
