Paths after School

Today, we trace the journey of Smera Merwade, a DPS alumnus whose path from uncertainty to pursuing medicine reflects the impact of the right learning environment.

When Smera first joined the Cambridge curriculum, she did not see herself as particularly academic, nor did she enjoy studying. What changed was not the subject, but the way it was taught.

At DPS East Cambridge, learning moved beyond memorisation to understanding.

Classrooms encouraged curiosity, critical thinking, and questions. Over time, this shift transformed her relationship with learning. Studying became something she genuinely enjoyed, a change that would go on to shape her future.

She also says, “One aspect that made a big difference was the smaller class sizes, which made it easier to participate and feel comfortable speaking up. It allowed for more one-on-one attention, and the teachers genuinely cared about each student and their individual progress. That supportive environment helped me grow both academically and personally.”

A defining influence in Smera’s journey was her biology teacher, Ms Chandralekha Bhattacharya. Explaining further, she says, “I still clearly remember a moment in class when I was struggling to understand a concept and went to her after the lesson to ask for help. The way she patiently explained it and connected it to how the human body actually works made everything suddenly make sense.

That moment stayed with me, and it was one of the first times I truly felt fascinated by how the human body functions.

Her passion for the subject and method of teaching fueled my interest in medicine and my desire to pursue a career in healthcare.”

Today, Smera is in her fourth year of medical studies in Milan, working towards becoming a surgeon.

Her experiences across India, Italy, and the UK through medical observerships have further strengthened her commitment to the field.

Her journey is a reminder that when learning is rooted in curiosity and supported by the right mentorship, it can open paths students may not have imagined for themselves.

If you’re still confused about what comes after A Levels, here’s a real story that might help you see the path more clearly.

Swastik Shandilya, an alumnus of the Cambridge curriculum, is currently pursuing his Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Honours) at Monash University Malaysia.

His journey is a great example of how the Cambridge pathway prepares students for global success.

The Cambridge curriculum is not just about exams; it’s about building a strong academic foundation and the right mindset.

During his A Levels, Swastik developed a deep understanding of core subjects like Mathematics and Physics, which are essential for engineering.

The curriculum’s focus on conceptual clarity, problem-solving, and application-based learning gave him an edge when applying to top international universities.

What truly set him apart was the emphasis on independent thinking and research. Through Cambridge, students are encouraged to question, analyse, and explore beyond textbooks.

This approach helped Swastik build confidence in handling complex engineering concepts even before stepping into university.

Another key advantage of the Cambridge pathway is its global recognition.

A Levels are widely accepted by universities across the world, including prestigious institutions like Monash.

This made Swastik’s transition from school to an international university seamless and stress-free.

Today, as he progresses in the field of Mechanical Engineering, Swastik’s journey stands as a reminder that the right foundation can open doors anywhere in the world.

So, if you’re wondering where the Cambridge curriculum can take you the answer is simple: anywhere you aspire to go.

Entrepreneurial thinking is not something that begins in adulthood; it is a mindset that can be nurtured early.

At Delhi Public School East Cambridge, the Young Pioneers Programme introduces students in Grades 6 to 8 to the fundamentals of entrepreneurship. It goes beyond basic classroom learning to build essential skills such as business awareness, decision-making, leadership, and creative problem-solving.

Through a structured, project-based approach, students engage with real-world challenges. They learn to identify problems, think critically, and develop practical solutions gaining a deeper understanding of how ideas can be transformed into meaningful outcomes.

With guided mentorship and hands-on experiences, learning moves beyond theory into application. Students are encouraged to take initiative, collaborate, and build confidence in their ability to think independently.

Because education today is not just about understanding systems
It is about preparing students to create them.

Is your child just studying… or actually understanding?
Because studying and understanding are not the same.

Finishing chapters, memorising answers, preparing for tests that’s easy to measure.
But real learning goes deeper.

Can your child explain a concept in their own words?

Can they apply it in a new situation?

Can they question, analyse, and think independently?

That’s where true understanding begins.

In the IGCSE approach, learning isn’t rushed.
It’s explored, discussed, and connected to real-world contexts.
Students are encouraged to ask questions, challenge ideas, and build clarity step by step.

Because education isn’t just about exams;
it’s about developing curiosity, confidence, and the ability to think for life.

What does a Cambridge classroom actually look like?

It begins even before the lesson begins.

A 40-minute class does not start with instruction. It starts with a hook.
A question. A situation. Something that sparks curiosity and draws students in.

The objective is clearly written on the board.
Not just what they will learn, but how they will learn.

Because in a Cambridge classroom, the process matters as much as the outcome.

The first 10 minutes may involve direct instruction.
But that is not the centre of the lesson.

Students are encouraged to speak, question, and build on ideas.
They are prompted to arrive at answers on their own, rather than being given them.

For the remaining time, the teacher steps into a different role.
Not as the sole source of knowledge, but as a facilitator.

Guiding discussions.
Challenging thinking.
Supporting exploration.

This is where frameworks like the 5E instructional model come alive.
Where learning moves from engagement to exploration, explanation, application, and reflection.

Over time, this approach builds the Cambridge learner profile in a very real way.

Confident in expressing ideas.
Reflective in their thinking.
Engaged in the process.
Responsible for their learning.
Innovative in how they approach problems.

Assessment, too, is continuous. Not just an end-point, but a way to understand how each student is progressing.

This is not about covering content.
It is about creating learners who can think, question, and apply.

That is what defines a Cambridge classroom at Delhi Public School Bangalore East CIE.

Admissions for the Cambridge programme are now open.

Our school library is a structured and purposeful learning space that supports students across all grades, from Primary to A Level. It provides an environment where students can engage in focused, uninterrupted reading and develop a consistent reading habit.

Each week, students visit the library and are encouraged to select books based on their individual interests ranging from fiction and mystery to history, mythology, and current affairs. The availability of magazines further enhances their awareness of real-world topics, research, and emerging trends.

For students in Grades 1 to 5, the Short Reads Programme is conducted monthly. This includes guided reading, small group discussions to build comprehension and vocabulary, and short reflective writing tasks to strengthen expression and critical thinking.

Beyond structured programmes, the library serves as a calm and supportive space that promotes independent learning, focus, and creativity. It also plays a significant role in improving students’ writing skills by exposing them to diverse perspectives and ideas.

At its core, the library is an integral part of our academic framework—fostering reading habits, encouraging thoughtful engagement, and supporting overall student development.

Most learning journeys begin at Grade 1.
We’re choosing to begin a little earlier.

At Delhi Public School East CIE, admissions are now open from Year 1 (2026–2027), aligned with the Cambridge pathway. For a 5-year-old, this is not just another class. It is the equivalent of UKG in the UK system, designed as a thoughtful bridge between early years and formal schooling.

What makes this different?

• A structured start
Cambridge-advised textbooks introduce concepts in a simple, well-sequenced way, making learning intuitive rather than overwhelming.

• Built for active learners
At this age, children are naturally curious. The programme is designed to keep them engaged, moving, questioning, and exploring.

• Grounded in how children actually learn
Early cognitive development is rapid. This stage focuses on building foundational skills in thinking, communication, and problem-solving, not just content.

• Smoother transition to Grade 1
Instead of a sudden shift, children ease into primary years with confidence and clarity.

Because early childhood education is not just preparation. It sets the tone for how children experience learning itself.

Admissions now open for Year 1 (2026–2027) for children aged 5 years and above.
