This lecture-demonstration explores the essential elements that bring a raga to life beyond its scale and skeletal framework. Through practical musical examples, participants will learn how to visualize and internalize the structure of a raga, understand the distinctive characteristics of Melakarta, Janya, Upanga, Bhashanga and Vakra ragas, and appreciate the subtle role of gamakas in shaping raga identity.
The session will also examine how musicians develop and sustain raga alapana—from a concise five-minute presentation to a more elaborate exploration—while maintaining coherence, aesthetics and emotional depth. In addition, participants will gain insights into the art of creating and developing sangatis from compositions, thereby bridging the worlds of composition and manodharma.
