We are proud to announce that our U-19 girls' team secured the runners-up position at the CISCE Regionals Throwball Tournament for Girls hosted at St. Dominic School on the 7th and 8th of August, 2024. The girls exhibited exceptional teamwork, and determination, throughout the tournament. Congratulations to the entire team for their unwavering dedication and hard work!

The 8th Grade Shilpites presented a captivating exploration of flowers through the Hoovu project. The project effectively showcased how flowers enrich our lives, from enhancing our health and culinary experiences to elevating beauty routines, fashion, and cultural traditions. Major Kunal Kuttappa, our Executive Director of Administration and an adventure sports enthusiast, provided an orientation to Shilpites today. He introduced them to the Vidyashilp Sports Center and Adventure Wing, emphasizing how adventure and sports can add new skills, build character, enhance personality and bring uniqueness to their lives.🚵‍♂️🏂🎿

Rao is a Ph.D. student in Computer Science, guided by Professor Andrés Monroy-Hernández. As a social computing researcher, he delves into the societal impacts of AI, especially in the realm of labor. Currently, with the Workers Algorithm Observatory (WAO), he’s exploring the needs and concerns of gig workers affected by algorithmic decisions in rideshare platforms, and creating tools to investigate these black-box systems.

In his past work, Rao identified a novel form of discrimination linked to selective imagery in job ads. His quantitative analysis showed how this practice, combined with ad delivery algorithms, skirts non-discrimination protections on platforms like Facebook.

Rao’s professional journey includes stints as an applied scientist and intern at Amazon, where he built explainable, retrieval-augmented vision-language models to protect customers and foster seller trust. At Apple, he interned with the Core Recognition team, developing OCR solutions for handwritten text. He earned his master’s degree from Carnegie Mellon University, focusing on computer vision and the privacy needs of incidental home IoT device users.

Rao also generously mentored our Shilpites, sharing his knowledge and inspiring the next generation of tech enthusiasts.

Today’s training marks a significant step in our commitment to promoting health and safety within our community. By equipping ourselves with the knowledge and skills necessary to respond effectively in emergency situations, we are not only enhancing our own capabilities but also empowering others to act swiftly and confidently when it matters most.
