Sometimes, something very small happens.
Someone smiles.
Someone doesn't reply.
Someone's tone sounds a little different.
Someone asks a simple question.
And before we know it, our mind has created an entire story around it.
Maybe they're unhappy with me.
Maybe I did something wrong.
Maybe they don't think I'm good enough.
The interesting part is that the event may be real.
But the meaning we've attached to it may not be.
And that meaning can be influenced by how we see ourselves, the doubts we already carry, and the emotional state we're in at that moment.
I was reminded of this recently when someone close to me shared how one small interaction had sent her into a spiral of assumptions.
It made me wonder how often we do this without even noticing.
So perhaps the next time something unsettles us, we can pause for a moment and ask:
What actually happened?
What did I make it mean?
Is this a fact, or is this a story?
Sometimes, that small pause can change the entire conversation happening inside our head.
