When I picked up the Gauntlet – We worked for something, not against something

Fourteen years ago, someone told me that online schooling would never work — and certainly not in rural India. I was told I was wasting my time.

I picked up the gauntlet. Today, eVidyaloka is the largest online school for rural India.

Today, another gauntlet has been thrown down. This time, the challenge is to build an integrated JEE and NEET programme with a new generation of leaders — but with one fundamental difference:

Can we make children enjoy the journey of learning, even while preparing for some of India's most demanding examinations?

Can they work hard whilst making learning joyful? Can ambition coexist with curiosity? Can a child prepare intensely — and still walk into the examination hall with confidence, calmness and a smile?

I pick up the gauntlet.

There are trees for which we sow the seeds knowing that we may never see them fully grown. But we sow the seeds anyway.

Perhaps this is one of those trees.

Obedience isn’t something we can simply demand from a child. It develops.

From “I can’t yet” to “I can sometimes” to “I choose to” - a child’s ability to follow a direction grows alongside their will and independence.

As adults, our role is not just to make children listen, but to create the conditions that help them develop self-discipline, choice and inner control.

Sometimes, before asking “Why won’t my child listen?”, we need to ask:
“Are they ready to?”
