This Day in Science History - -

(February 17)

in 1869 (according to the Julian calendar used in Russia at that time), Russian chemist published a chart of the 60-odd elements known at the time, sorted by their and properties. He called it "An Attempt at a System of Elements, Based on Their Atomic Weight and Chemical Affinity."

It has come to be regarded as one of the greatest contributions of all time.

If India is a prominent player in energy today, it has Dr Homi Jehangir Bhabha and his foresight to thank for it. He is our (first) "scientist of the day" today. (Today we have two articles)

It's death anniversary of Padma Bhushan, professor , father of the Indian nuclear power programme - - -

(Scientist of the Day - 24 January)

Bhabha studied engineering, mathematics and physics at the University of , before choosing to specialize in physics and rays. At an age of 31, he was elected as a fellow of the Royal Society, London. Bhabha rubbed shoulders with great physicists like , , , and others, who later became Noble Laureates.

He gained international prominence after deriving a correct expression for the probability of scattering by , a process now known as Bhabha (look the shown image). The Bhabha scattering rate is used as a luminosity monitor in electron-positron colliders. His major contribution included his work on Compton scattering, R-process, and furthermore the advancement of nuclear physics.

He was the founding director of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) in 1945 and Trombay Atomic Energy Establishment (later renamed Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, in his memory).
