When Merit Is Ignored: The Cost of Judging Students by Identity Instead of Effort

Think about it—what was the fault of those students who cleared NEET through sheer hard work?

Cracking a national-level exam like NEET is no small achievement. It demands years of discipline, sacrifice, late-night study sessions, and mental resilience. For these 50 students—42 Muslims, 7 Hindus, and 1 Sikh—their success should have been a moment of pride, not controversy.

Yet, instead of celebrating merit, a disturbing turn of events unfolded. Protests erupted—not over academic standards, infrastructure, or quality of education—but purely on the basis of religious identity. The result? The college’s accreditation was revoked, putting the futures of these deserving students at risk.

This raises an uncomfortable but necessary question:
When did identity become more important than effort?

Education is meant to be the great equalizer. It is one of the few spaces where backgrounds are supposed to dissolve, and ability is meant to matter more than labels. When students are punished for something they did not choose—their religion—it undermines the very foundation of fairness and democracy.

These young minds didn’t ask for special treatment.
They asked for one thing: to be judged on merit.

If we start measuring dreams by names, surnames, or beliefs, we don’t just fail students—we fail as a society.

This is not about numbers.
It is about justice.
It is about conscience.
It is about the future.

Because when merit is ignored, everyone loses.
