Importance of Early Childhood Education

What is the purpose of early childhood education?
“Early childhood care and education (ECCE) is more than preparation for primary school. It aims at the holistic development of a child's social, emotional, cognitive and physical needs in order to build a solid and broad foundation for lifelong learning and wellbeing.

What is needed for early childhood education?
For children, these essential needs include warm, caring, and responsive adults; a sense of importance and significance; a way to relate to the world around them; opportunities to move and play; and people to help structure and support their learning.

How do children learn?
Children learn in different ways – some learn by seeing, some by hearing, some by reading, and some by doing. And at this stage, children still learn through play. .Children aren't born with social skills – they have to learn them, just like they have to learn to read and write.

Importance of Cursive writing.

I personally thought Cursive writing helped in good hand writing, I started researching about it when
My daughter was not thought cursive in her preschool. When I questioned the teacher, I was told not to worry, main stream schools are not particular about it… Somehow the teacher failed to convince me and that’s when I started reading about it.
As I was reading, I realized why schools’ should implement it.

1. It is good for hand writing,
2. It improves concentration.
3. It activates a different part of the brain than regular writing does.
4. Learning cursive gives students a clearer understanding of letters formation.
5. Cursive writing helps train the brain to integrate visual (and) tactile information, and fine motor dexterity.
6. Cursive makes your writing faster.

Should we Introduce Cursive in School?

I believe, yes! If teaching cursive writing is not thought in schools, children are missing out big time. I understand we are getting digital globally, but how do we retain one of the classic writing skills which has been around since 19th Century. Cursive reinforces that learning should simply be for learning not just to pass a test.

Importance of storytelling

If you want your children to be smart, tell them stories. If you want them to be brilliant, tell them more stories. - Albert Einstein

Listening to stories is something every child looks forward to. As I little girl, I grew up listening to Ramayana, Mahabharata, Amar chitra Katha, Jataka tales and of course, Shikari Shambu and Suppandi (my all-time favorite)

Reading stories helps in child development.
You can read, stories with your child in whatever language you feel most comfortable speaking.Using a language you’re comfortable with helps you to communicate more easily and helps storytelling more fun for you both. Your child will still learn that words are made up of different letters, syllables and sounds, and that words usually link to the pictures on the page.
Benefits of Storytelling
1. Helps your child get to know sounds, words and
language, and develop early literacy skills
2. It increases the memory
3. Improves listening skills (They learn to be more patient
as they listen to others speak)
4. Sparks your children’s imagination and curiosity.
5. It helps them understand real and imagination.
6. Learns to value books.
7. Improves social skills and communication skills.

Reading stories with children has benefits for grown-ups too. The special time you spend reading together promotes bonding.
Ti**le was my favorite book when I was growing up, I loved Suppandi! Who was your favorite character, when you were growing up?

Preschoolers’ and Scissors
By: Sowmya Setty – Bright Beginnings Academy

Ever wondered why Scissors is given to kids at preschools?
Trust me, it can do wonders!
Cutting is one of the major fine motor skills. One might think, it’s a most basic skill, but it’s actually really difficult. It takes a ton of finger strength to hold a paper with one hand and maneuver the scissors with the other takes lots of focus, bilateral coordination, and strength. It improves the tripod grasp and cutting on a straight line and switching lines can be a great visual motor activity. Sometimes, the best way to calm down a child who’s refusing to write could be a scissor cutting activity.
Children may have the skills to use small scissors by three to four years of age, but scissor skills are not fully developed until 6 years of age also make sure that scissors have rounded rather than pointy ends for safety and lastly but very important never leave them alone without supervision.

Benefits of Cutting
1. It Improves Concentration
2. Cutting Improves hand and eye co-ordination.
3. It helps kids develop hand dominance, and will help them with their balance and coordination.
4. Strengthens Hand Muscles

Materials to cut
Start with materials that do not require much holding and positioning. Also, it is best to start with things that require only one snip, not a couple of cuts.
This list goes from easiest to hardest:

Scissor Activity Ideas
• Ask your child to snip a play dough sausage into pieces with their scissors.
•Try getting your child to cut a plastic drinking straw into pieces to make ‘beads’. They can then lace them together to practice their threading skills.
•Get your child to snip along a piece of thick card (as this is more rigid for a child to hold). Then get them to try snipping different textures before moving onto paper.
