The Mauryans employed female bodyguards. Especially for within the palace. Not just the Mauryans, really. The practice may or may not have originated with them, but it definitely did not end with them. Female bodyguards were very much in vogue until at least medieval India. Called Striganairadhanvibhihi, they were armed with bows and arrows. In the Arthashastra, the structure of the king’s security is detailed as follows : the innermost chambers are specifically guarded by Striganairadhanvibhihi. The second layer of security is given by eunuchs, the third layer of security by Kubjas, Vamana’s and Kiratas and lastly, the fourth layer of security by ministers, kinsmen and doorkeepers.
