The Foldscope Initiative: A Department of Biotechnology outreach initiative
Last year, the Department of Biotechnology had initiated a departmental outreach activity for Loyola PU College at Manvi, with a vision to establish a portable microscope library in the Biology lab at Loyola. The aim is to transcend basic sciences at the grassroot level in a rural community like Manvi where tribal groups comprise the major population. Hence we have started the 'Foldscope Initiative' to try to contribute in whichever small way is possible for us.
The first phase was discussing this proposal with Foldscopes Inc, California. To our great joy, Foldscope Inc donated 120 Foldscopes to us. 50% of this was already handed over to Fr Praveen, Principal at Loyola Manvi.
The second phase was to train the 11th-12th standard students there so that the library establishment could be initiated. For this, a three-days immersive workshop was successfully conducted between 7th-9th April, 2025, at Loyola PU College Manvi. The resource persons were Dr Anupma Harshal, an Indo-DST Foldscope grant awardee, and Dr Debarati.
Hopefully, this initiative that we have started bears a favorable outcome and is able to stir a scientific rigor and an analytical mindset in school students at rural areas.
