Essential & engaging edtech initiative for kids and parents

10/08/2021

Teaching children to control thoughts is a challenging task.

Yes, sometimes life sends us difficult situations, but one of the most powerful lessons that we can teach our children is that they have the power to control their thoughts. We can choose to see the good or positive aspects of a situation, and although it does not always feel like it, there is usually a critical life lesson that can be found in almost any circumstance. This understanding enables children to handle life’s ups and downs with more resiliency, leading to happier, healthier children.

Children learn through emotions, feelings, and experiences. Positive, playful emotions promote learning, whereas negative emotions, like stress and anxiety, hinder it. An optimistic brain works better!

Henry Ford once said, “If you think you can, you can. If you think you can’t, you can’t. Either way, you are right.” This is so true and indeed worth passing on. So, as a parent, how can you create a “can-do, will-try” attitude in your children?

You can start by encouraging a positive attitude and creating an environment that nurtures your children’s beliefs in their abilities. Having that confidence enables them to take risks that will help them reach their potential.

Parents can empower their children and support social-emotional learning by teaching them about affirmations and how to use them. It might be helpful to have your child notice their thoughts and how specific thoughts make them feel. There isn't a "right" and "wrong" way to feel. However, some feelings and thought patterns serve us better than others.

While we can't always control the curveballs life throws our way, we can change our thinking about them. Explain to your child that with a bit of practice and flexing of their mental muscles, they can choose positive thinking as much as possible.

Using playful language and a light-hearted tone can make it more approachable for children. Introducing kids to affirmations in fun and engaging way is definitely encouraged.

One of the most challenging parts of parenting is when children address their anger towards us. If you're not careful, you find their anger fueling emotions in you that you never realized were in you.

The best way to teach kids how to deal with anger constructively is by showing them through your example! After all, you don't learn how to calm down by reading about it in a book, but by seeing someone do it. So use those frustrating experiences as "on-the-spot lessons" to your child of ways to calm down. Remember, calm is contagious—and so is anxiety. It's been proven that a parent's anxiety about their child contributes significantly to their child's anxiety.

Think of it this way: if you can't get calm and in control, you're creating the exact atmosphere you're trying to avoid. The goal is to respond thoughtfully rather than simply reacting.

Anger can be thought of as a "secondary emotion," meaning that the anger we see on the surface might be masking underlying emotions that can be harder to identify. These other feelings – fear, frustration, hurt, disappointment, etc. – are quite painful and give a sense of vulnerability and helplessness.

Anger can be very addicting because it serves as a sort of emotional anesthesia to numb these painful feelings. Helping your child understand their emotions may prevent them from escalating to anger. But no one, least of all children, has complete control over their feelings. Correct any aggressive or hurtful behaviors, but give your child permission and space to be angry sometimes.

Anger is a common and normal feeling that everyone experiences, but that doesn't mean we need to live in that occasionally painful place.

We usually use the term "aggressive" as a term for someone who has a lot of zeal and is ambitious.
However, aggression or anger as a concept is frowned upon. Not so surprisingly though, Anger is a positive emotion.

Using a feelings thermometer can help kids make the connection between their feelings and their coping skills.

Here's how you can make an anger thermometer.

1. Have the child pick out three colors, one for each thermometer section and color it in. Then talk about each section.
2. Ask what it looks like when they are just a little angry at the bottom of the thermometer. Do they sigh loudly, growl, etc.?
3. Then move on to the middle section of the thermometer. If they are medium-sized angry, what does that look like? Does their voice get louder? Do they stomp their feet, etc.?
4. Finally, talk about what it looks like when experiencing great anger at the top of the thermometer. What does that look like? Is it yelling, throwing things, etc.? Once we go through and identify behaviors on the thermometer, we work on identifying coping skills they can use to calm down. Make sure they have coping skills that will help them at each level of anger.

It's essential to have various coping skills for each level because not all coping skills will work all the time. For example, for some kids, taking a drink of water can help calm them down when they are just slightly angry. However, when they are furious, getting a glass of water won't help. They need to do something different at that point, like take a break.

World Nature Conservation Day takes place on 28th July each year. This day was created to recognize how a healthy environment is the foundation of a productive and stable society. This day is perfect for teaching our children how to protect, conserve and manage the earth’s natural resources.

Everyone depends on natural resources such as air, water, food, minerals, animals, trees and gas. To enable the continuation of these resources, various species must continue to exist: making conservation vital.
