Emotional Environment
The environment is more than just a physical space. It contains the emotions of the children and everyone else who spend time in it.
Children grow and develop rapidly in the early years. Social and emotional development is a major part of the child’s life. On a larger perspective, it means how children start to understand who they are, what they are feeling and what to expect when interacting with others.
It is the development of being able to:
• Form and sustain positive relationships.
• Experience, manage and express emotions.
• Explore and engage with the environment.
The adults in the environment form the main components of this emotional space. The children are able to access the following of the adults around them:
• Thoughts
• Fears
• Emotions
• Personality
• Expressions
• Language and Body Language
• Responses and reactions
The children learn from the ways the adults handle their daily situations and relationships. They absorb all the expressions; be it facial or the verbal.
There are 9 types of bhavas/rasas/emotions in a human:
1) Shringaara – love
2) Haasya – laughter
3) Karuna - kind-heartedness or compassion
4) Roudra – anger
5) Veera – courage
6) Bhayaanaka – fear
7) Bheebhatsya – disgust
8) Adbhutha - wonder or surprise
9) Shaantha - peace or tranquility (shaantha)
There are 5 categories of emotional intelligence:
1) Self-Awareness
2) Self-Regulation
3) Empathy
4) Social skills
5) Motivation
The other main factor that affects a child’s socio-emotional growth is its own temperament. The children are born with temperament traits. These traits drive the way the child deals with the different situations and emotions.
The Environment
Environment! The space in which the baby grows. A space which facilitates natural and progressive development in a child.
Enabling environments encourages the babies and children and allows the learning to occur.
When one says environment, all the attention is given to the physical environment. But that not it!
A complete environment consists of the following:
1) Physical
2) Emotional
3) Temporal
This environment is the world of the children. It should be flexible, beautiful and must be done with lots of love and consideration. It must be maintained and changed as per the child’s need and growth. This space must adhere to all needs and must be conducive to learning.
The child must feel safe and secure in this space created. When the children feel emotionally safe and secure, they feel relaxed and comfortable. This enables them to explore and learn more about their world. This encourages the child to adapt to their culture, time and space.
Each factor to be given in detail in the coming post!
