Some journeys begin much before we actually find the right path.

Bharatanatyam was something I wanted to learn since childhood, but life kept interrupting that journey again and again.

Years later, when I was already a mother, I finally found the Guru who did not look at my age, my circumstances or my limitations.

She simply saw that I still wanted to learn.

My Guru, Prerna Tuljapurkar Tai.
Through her guidance at Taal Nritya Academy, Pune, an old dream slowly became a real journey.

For me, a Guru is not only someone who teaches an art. Sometimes, a Guru is the person who sees the possibility in you when you are still trying to find it yourself.

This is Part 1 of my Bharatanatyam journey — the story of finding my Guru. ❤️

आडासा स्थित श्री विघ्नेश मंदिर में गणराया के सान्निध्य में भरतनाट्यम के माध्यम से अपनी नृत्य सेवा अर्पित करना मेरे लिए केवल एक प्रस्तुति नहीं, बल्कि एक गहरा आध्यात्मिक अनुभव था।

कुछ क्षण ऐसे होते हैं जब कलाकार मंच पर नहीं रहता—वह केवल एक माध्यम बन जाता है। उस क्षण नृत्य भी प्रार्थना बन जाता है, भाव भी अर्पण बन जाते हैं, और हर मुद्रा, हर कदम ईश्वर के चरणों में समर्पित हो जाता है।

गणराया के सामने नृत्य करते हुए मन में केवल यही भाव था—
जो कला मिली है, वह भी आपकी कृपा है… और उसे आपके चरणों में अर्पित कर पाना भी आपकी ही कृपा है।

इस पावन अवसर के लिए हृदय की गहराइयों से कृतज्ञ हूँ।
जिन्होंने मुझे यह नृत्य सेवा करने का अवसर दिया, उनका हृदय से बहुत-बहुत धन्यवाद। 🙏🌺

श्री गणेशाच्या चरणी नृत्यसेवा अर्पण करण्याची संधी मिळणे, हे माझ्यासाठी केवळ एक सादरीकरण नव्हते, तर एक आशीर्वाद होता. 🙏🌺

आदासा येथील श्री शमी विघ्नेश मंदिरात गणेश वंदना सादर करण्यासाठी मला आमंत्रित केल्याबद्दल मंदिर समिती व संपूर्ण टीमचे मनःपूर्वक आभार.

विघ्नहर्त्याने आपल्या चरणी माझ्याकडून ही छोटीशी भक्तीसेवा आणि नृत्यसेवा करून घेतली, यासाठी मन कृतज्ञतेने भरून आले आहे.

हा मंच, ही संधी आणि बाप्पाच्या सान्निध्यात नृत्य करण्याचा हा अनुभव माझ्यासाठी सदैव विशेष राहील. ❤️

Nandikeshvara & Abhinaya Darpana — where Shastra begins to enter the dancer’s body.

For me, this part of the journey is very beautiful.

We first understand the vastness of Natya Shastra… and then, through Abhinaya Darpana, we come closer to the actual language of dance — the eyes, the hands, the head, the neck, the body and expression.

Tradition attributes this text to Nandikeshvara.

And personally, I feel a deep connection with the understanding that Nandikeshvara was Nandi — the one who remained so close to Mahadev, witnessing his Tandava, his Leela and the sacred world of Shiva and Shakti.

From Bharatarnava to Abhinaya Darpana, this is where dance starts becoming a language.
And from here, we move into the next beautiful concepts:
Nritta. Nritya. Natya.

But before that I will share about my dance lineage and my Guru 🙏🏼

Who was Nandikeshvara, and why is Abhinaya Darpana so important in Indian classical dance?

After understanding the vast world of Natya Shastra, this carousel takes us one step closer to the actual language of the dancer.

Tradition connects Nandikeshvara with the knowledge of dance and Abhinaya, and the Abhinaya Darpana beautifully explains how the dancer communicates through the eyes, hands, head, neck, body and expression.

For me personally, I connect Nandikeshvara with Nandi — the one who remained so close to Mahadev, witnessing his Tandava, his Leela and the sacred world of Shiva and Shakti.

From Bharatarnava to Abhinaya Darpana, and from Shastra to the dancer’s own body…
this is where the language of Bharatanatyam begins to unfold more deeply.

I will also talk about my lineage and my Guru of the Bharatnatyam.

Next, we move into Nritta, Nritya and Natya.

Some stories stay with you because they are not only stories… they show us a deeper truth.

For me, Tandava and Lasya are like that.

One is intense, powerful, moving toward transformation.
The other is soft, graceful and balancing.

And somewhere between Shiva and Shakti, we understand that life also needs both—

strength and softness,
movement and balance,
power and grace.

This reel is a small glimpse into the beautiful traditional story of Tandu Rishi, Mahadev and Maa Parvati, and how Tandava and Lasya became part of the larger language of Indian classical dance.

The more I learn about Bharatanatyam, the more I feel that every movement carries something much deeper behind it. ✨

Tandava and Lasya — two beautiful expressions of Shiva and Shakti.

Tandava is powerful, dynamic and connected with the cosmic movement of Srishti, Sthiti and Samhara.

Lasya is gentle, graceful, soft and beautifully balanced.

In the traditional story, Mahadev gives the knowledge of Tandava to Tandu Rishi, and when the dance moves toward Samhara, Maa Parvati joins with her graceful movement—bringing balance through Lasya.

For me, this story shows something very beautiful:

Shiva is power.

Shakti is balance.

Tandava is force.

Lasya is grace.

And together, they become an important part of the larger tradition of Indian classical dance.
