📡 ICMP Explained | Internet Control Message Protocol 🚀

ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol) is a network-layer protocol used to send error messages, diagnostic information, and connectivity status between network devices.

It is commonly used by tools such as Ping and Tracert for network troubleshooting.

🔹 What is ICMP Used For?

✅ Test network connectivity
✅ Identify unreachable devices
✅ Report network errors
✅ Troubleshoot routing problems
✅ Check packet loss and connectivity
✅ Help identify network paths
✅ Diagnose network communication issues

🔍 Common ICMP Message Types

🔹 Echo Request – Sent when you run Ping
🔹 Echo Reply – Response received from the destination
🔹 Destination Unreachable – Destination or service cannot be reached
🔹 Time Exceeded – TTL expires, commonly used by Tracert

🛠️ Useful Commands

Test connectivity:

ping 8.8.8.8

Test a hostname:

ping google.com

Trace the network path:

tracert 8.8.8.8

Continuous Ping:

ping 8.8.8.8 -t

Stop Continuous Ping:

Ctrl + C

⚠️ Important Point

ICMP is not TCP or UDP, so it does not use TCP/UDP port numbers.

Also, a failed Ping does not always mean the destination is down. ICMP may be blocked by a firewall or network device.

🔐 How Do AD Security Groups Control File Access with DFS?

A user opens:

\\company.local\Files\Finance

But gets:

❌ Access Denied

Here’s the basic flow:

User
↓
AD Security Group
↓
DFS Namespace
↓
DFS Referral
↓
File Server
↓
Share Permissions
↓
NTFS Permissions
↓
File Access

👥 Example

Ravi → GG-Finance → Finance Folder

Instead of assigning permissions directly to Ravi, assign permissions to the security group.

For different access levels:

GG-Finance-Read → Read

GG-Finance-Modify → Modify

🧩 AGDLP

Accounts → Global Groups → Domain Local Groups → Permissions

Example:

Ravi → GG-Finance → DL-Finance-Modify → Finance Folder

🔍 Access Denied? Check:

🔹 DFS path
🔹 Actual folder target
🔹 AD group membership
🔹 whoami /groups
🔹 Share permissions
🔹 NTFS permissions
🔹 Permission inheritance
🔹 Effective Access

And remember:

DFS gives the path.
AD groups organize access.
Share + NTFS permissions enforce access.

📂 How do users access shared folders through DFS?

Instead of remembering:

\\FS01\Finance
\\FS02\HR
\\FS03\IT

Users can use one logical path:

\\company.local\Files

Actual Folder Target
↓
Share + NTFS Permissions
↓
Files

🧠 Remember:

DFS Namespace = Logical access path + referrals

DFS Replication = File replication

They are not the same thing.

If DFS isn’t working, check:

🔹 AD connectivity
🔹 DFS Namespace
🔹 DFS Referral
🔹 SMB / Port 445
🔹 Share permissions
🔹 NTFS permissions

Useful commands:

nslookup company.local

Test-NetConnection FS01 -Port 445

And remember:

DFS gives you the path. Permissions determine what you can access.

✅ Combines multiple ESXi hosts

First identify where the process is failing.

🔹 Check Entra ID user & Sign-in Logs
🔹 Check Conditional Access
🔹 Run dsregcmd /status
🔹 Check Intune enrollment
🔹 Check device last check-in
🔹 Check compliance status
🔹 Check application assignment & exclusions
🔹 Review Intune Management Extension logs
🔹 Check DNS, proxy, VPN & firewall
🔹 Sync the device
🔹 Test again
