"... So do not wrong yourselves during them... "
*Muharram: The First Message of the Sacred Month — Protect Yourself from Sin*
Allah has declared *Muharram* to be one of the *four sacred months*. But what does the sanctity of this month require from us?
Allah says:
> *"...So do not wrong yourselves during them."*
> *(Surah At-Tawbah 9:36)*
This is Allah's first message regarding the sacred months:
*Do not wrong yourselves. Stop oppressing yourselves. Hold yourselves back from sin.*
What Does It Mean to "Wrong Yourself"?
In Islam, *every sin is an act of ظلم (wronging oneself).*
Whether a sin is:
* Against *Allah*,
* Against *another person*, or
* Against *your own self*,
*the first person harmed by that sin is you.*
Every act of disobedience distances us from Allah, deprives us of His blessings, and damages our own soul before it harms anyone else.
*How Do We Honor Muharram?*
Allah's command is not simply to acknowledge that Muharram is sacred, but to *live differently because of it.*
Honor this blessed month by fulfilling every right that Allah has placed upon you:
✅ *The rights of Allah* – Worship Him alone, obey His commands, and avoid what He has forbidden.
✅ *The rights of people* – Treat others with justice, fulfill their rights, and do not oppress or harm anyone.
✅ *The rights of your own soul* – Protect yourself from sins and everything that leads to Allah's displeasure.
Likewise, avoid:
* Every sin.
* Every act of disobedience.
* Every injustice.
* Every violation of another person's rights.
* Every action prohibited by Allah and His Messenger ﷺ.
Live with Greater Awareness
As Muslims, we are required to obey Allah throughout our lives. But during the sacred months, *our awareness and obedience should become even stronger.*
Think about Ramadan.
When Ramadan arrives, we naturally become more careful:
* "I must avoid sins."
* "I need to control my tongue."
* "I should increase my worship."
This is a beautiful attitude.
*The same awareness—and even greater respect—should exist during the sacred months, especially Muharram.*
Remind yourself every day:
> *"I am living in one of Allah's sacred months. I must be even more careful not to disobey Him."*
*🌱 So...*
*Muharram is not just the beginning of a new year—it is Allah's reminder to begin a new chapter of obedience.*
The true way to honor Muharram is *not through celebrations or customs, but by protecting yourself from sin, fulfilling the rights of Allah and His creation, and drawing closer to Him through repentance, worship, and righteous deeds.*
