Four new lives at Kuno. India’s cheetah population has now reached 56. 🐆

KGP12—an India-born daughter of South African cheetah Gamini—has given birth to four cubs at Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh.

Current population:
• 36 India-born cheetahs
• 20 African-origin cheetahs
• 53 at Kuno National Park
• 3 at Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary

The birth is significant because an India-born female has produced the next generation. Yet the earlier loss of KGP12’s four cubs in a leopard attack reminds us that successful births are only one part of conservation. Cub survival, suitable habitat, prey availability and genetic diversity remain essential.

FROM RESEARCH TO REAL-WORLD PRODUCTS — A Homegrown Innovation Ecosystem Is Taking Root

Technologies once imported into India are increasingly being invented at home. Public research, corporate R&D and deep-tech entrepreneurship are now advancing together, closing a strategic gap in critical technology.

This editorial highlights:
✅ Gallium Nitride (GaN) semiconductor tech, vital for advanced radar, space systems and next-gen communications, is now being developed domestically after a 2023 DRDO-GAETEC breakthrough, easing reliance on export-controlled foreign tech.
✅ Patent filings grew 30.2% in 2024-25 to over 1,43,000, with domestic applicants filing almost 7 in 10 — yet India spends under 1% of GDP on R&D, versus 2.4% in China and 3.5% in the US.
✅ Startups like Pixxel (satellite imaging) and NexCAR19 (India's first indigenous CAR-T therapy, at a fraction of typical treatment costs) show research turning into real products.
✅ Private R&D spending exceeded all government levels combined for the first time in 2024, set to reach 55% of total R&D by 2025-26.
✅ India is shifting from standard-implementer to standard-setter in global tech bodies, with technical contributions to 3G/4G/5G standards rising sharply since 2020.
✅ What needs attention: clearer tech-transfer terms for publicly funded IP, stronger patent-examination capacity, and funding the gap between a granted patent and a first paying customer.

Rising filings alone don't prove innovation — what matters is granted patents, licences, working products and paying customers.

Karnataka Cabinet Approves Official Language Status for Tulu

Tulu has got a big push. The Karnataka Cabinet has decided to accord additional official language status to Tulu in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts — a long-pending demand of the Tulu-speaking community.

Key highlights 👇
✅ Additional official language status for Tulu in Dakshina Kannada & Udupi
✅ A draft notification will be issued inviting public suggestions/objections within one month
✅ Status applies to administrative matters; district administrations will implement it
✅ ₹82 lakh to be allocated annually for translation, training and language usage
✅ Mangaluru Fisheries College to be upgraded as a Fisheries University (intake 60 → 200 seats)
✅ Cabinet cleared expenditure proposals worth ₹32,611 crore, including ₹16,000 crore for rural development

Before India collided with Eurasia, the Tethys oceanic plate subducted beneath the Eurasian continental plate. This Oceanic–Continental convergence formed the Trans-Himalayas (Karakoram, Ladakh & Zaskar ranges), north of the Great Himalayas.
