‘Whole Body Listening’, is a much debated concept.
Should children be told by teachers to sit with their hands folded and legs crossed and mouths shut? Of course not, that is too dictatorial.
But should we teach children ‘Whole Body Listening’? Yes we should and we should do it keeping in mind the age and other developmental needs of children.
Listening to someone give instructions or share something or teach you something is an essential skill but for children there are major questions and confusion-
* What do I do with my hands while listening as they want to fidget!
* What do I do with my legs? They want to move!
* What do I do with my eyes? Sometimes they are bored!
Helping children understand what to do with their body while they are listening is called ‘Whole Body Listening’, not by making them sit like statues.
When we help children become aware about their whole body and what it needs to listen, then we are helping children be more focused, pay attention and understand social rules too.
First let children learn to control their bodies, its called impulse control and self regulation and then they will be able to practice ‘Whole Body Listening’. And you can help them with simple cues like show me your ‘elephant ears’ or ‘look at me’. These cues can be taught to help children learn to take control of their own focus and attention.
Just like each child has a unique learning style, similarly each child has a unique ‘listening style’, observe and notice it-
* Some listen with their eyes on you and some listen by focusing away from you.
* Some listen while fidgeting with their fingers
* Some listen while tapping their feet
* Some sit still and listen
As long as children understand what you are saying and are able to follow it, respect their listening style.
Remember, its all about empowering children and not about being a powerful teacher in the class!

Our recent "International Mud Day - “Splish, Splash, Let’s Make a Muddy Mash” " was a success! We want to express our gratitude to everyone who made it so special.
