PANCHLIGHT - Assam Chapter

On 26th of January 2022, as India celebrated its 73rd Republic Day, youths of Assam's Cachar district took charge of leading their village to a brighter future. With Panchlight's support Mutum Leikai Youth Club of Singerband village inaugurated ‘Laishu Mahaikol’ - a centre for joyful and all round learning of children.

Laishu Mahaikol aims to support children in studying school curriculum and to connect them with their culture and environment. Through activities like storytelling, community work and sports etc., children will get to immerse in local traditions and biodiversity.

Swapan Ashangbam, currently a farmer by profession after working in the development sector for nearly 20 years, is leading Laishu Mahaikol. Two volunteers have begun imparting experiential learning to 13 children of their village. The event has been made possible with onsite assistance of Nilakshi Chakraborty who will continue being the initiative's pillar there.

15 months and counting...
Time to lead them back to school.

Local volunteers have so far rescued nearly two dozen people from the flooded Ghaghra river at Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh. Many others are still waiting for help to reach. Meanwhile, the "Emergency" Relief from the district administration reached the proximity of affected area five hours after being called and took virtual update of the situation.
Visuals in the video are from Vijay Nagar and Mangalpurwa areas of Mihinpurwa block. The block located at Indo-Nepal border is also the habitat of thriving wildlife including tigers, leopards, elephants etc. But when human life is so neglected, would the wildlife lost will even be accounted for?

"Secular", "democratic", "justice" and "equality" are the few terms comprising the Preamble to the Indian Constitution. Days of National importance, like the 72th Republic Day which India celebrated this week, are seen as opportunity to stir discussions around these concept and contemplate on their true meaning. Now, how do you convey the essence of these abstract concepts to a 10 year old who, on a daily basis, enjoys the privileges or bears the consequences of belonging to a particular caste, religion and economic background?

To celebrate Republic day at Panchlight, instead of lecturing, our volunteers enabled the students to live by the basic principles of the Constitution for at least a day. On 26th and 27th January, each center conducted sports events, distributed sweets and honoured the winner with medals.

Groups, instead of individuals competed and each group had participants from all age groups ranging from 4 to 18 years. Each group elected it's leader and each group member had an equal opportunity and responsibility to contribute to the group's victory. One student from each group, or two groups competed in frog race, lemon spoon race, kho-kho, kabbadi and quiz etc. The teams that stood first and second received medals on 27th from the volunteer in the presence of parents and curious onlookers.
