"The eyes are the only organs directly exposed to the environment, making them uniquely vulnerable to external changes and damage."
With this perspective in mind, our school was honoured to host Dr. Sanjeev Thapar for an enlightening session on pediatric eye health.Teachers of Jingle Bell School and J B Bal Sadan attended the session. Dr. Thapar emphasized that vision is not only a biological necessity but a cornerstone of a child's academic journey, highlighting the pivotal role teachers play in early detection.
The session covered common childhood conditions, including myopia, hypermetropia, astigmatism, amblyopia, seasonal allergies and conjunctivitis. Dr. Thapar identified critical "red flags" for educators to monitor, such as:
* Students preferring to sit unusually close to the board.
* Frequent eye rubbing or unexplained attention deficits.
* Recurring spelling mistakes or a tendency toward injuries during outdoor play.
By identifying these signs early, teachers can act as a vital bridge—counseling parents on the need for professional check-ups and advocating for the eye health of siblings.
To combat the modern challenge of digital strain, Dr. Thapar shared essential "Screen Etiquette." He recommended using larger screens with low brightness in well-illuminated environments. Central to his advice was the 20-20-20 Rule: every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break to look at something 20 feet away. This simple habit relaxes the ocular muscles and prevents dryness.
The session concluded with a focus on holistic care, including the benefits of Omega-3 and a diet rich in colorful fruits. He also stressed the importance of physical maintenance for spectacles, ensuring they remain free of scratches and structural damage to prevent injury.
