This is the simplest of concepts which makes a BIG, BIG difference and will change your relationships with everyone around you.
If you are like me, you probably spend a lot of your day planning how things in life will be for you, or maybe you worry about the future or replay the past. Whatever our individual stories, it's a fact we as humans spend more time in our heads than we do just living the here and now. I remember listening to an Alan Watts recording about how we were all connected to the trees and the grass and each other and I couldn't quite get what he meant with that, but one day it hit me and it made a big difference.
You see, we don't spend a lot of time in the present moment. When we stare out the window at the trees blowing in the wind, we're thinking about the argument we're going to have tomorrow, or how we won't be able to do what we wanted because of money, other people, our health. But by doing this we miss the present moment - we've traded a story in our head for a moment of life that we'll never get back. And once you understand this, this is where life starts to change.
When you spend time with people and I really mean spending time with people, not playing with your phone, not thinking, not planning, when you spend time the presence of people and you are truly there and present, then that's the difference that makes the difference. And it feels good too x
