In India, Bachelor of Education(B.Ed) is a course offered for those interested in pursing career in teaching. The B.Ed degree is mandatory for teaching in higher primary schools and high schools. The minimum qualification required for entry into BEd course is Bachelor of Arts(B.A), Bachelor of Science (BSc)or Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com). While students from arts stream are trained to teach subjects like history, civics, geography and languages. The students from science stream are trained to teach mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology. After BEd, students can pursue Master in Education (MEd) in Indian universities. National Council for Teacher Education is statutory body which regulates courses in teaching in India. The Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed.) programme is a four-year integrated professional degree programme of Elementary Teacher Education offered after the senior secondary (class XII) stage of school. Conceptualized by the Maulana Azad Centre for Elementary and Social Education (MACESE) of the Department of Education, University of Delhi and launched in the academic year 1994-95, the programme is an attempt towards fulfilling the need for professionally qualified elementary school teachers. B.El.Ed. is designed to integrate the study of subject knowledge, human development, pedagogical knowledge and communication skills. Both professional and academic options are available to students who graduate with a B.El.Ed. degree

There is a course called Diploma in Education (DEd) or TCH meant for teaching in primary and nursery schools in India. However the qualification for admission to this course is pass in pre university course.

The Marathwada College of Education was established in 1970 under the auspices of the Late Dr Rafiq Zakaria, renowned scholar, politician of great integrity, educationist of great foresight and an eminent author of international repute. The College bears testimony to Dr Rafiq Zakaria’s foresight and vision in recognizing the need for a college of education that would focus on training teachers of Urdu, Marathi and English and imbibe in them the spirit of secularism and national integration.

The college is in the beautiful premises of Dr. Rafiq Zakaria Campus, housed in the magnificent building with excellent infrastructural facilities and well equipped laboratories, ideal for imparting quality teacher education.

The College is highly acknowledged, and is considered to be among the best institutes of its kind in the state today with its track record of high attainments in academics. Adding to its lure is the recent “A+” accreditation it has been given by the National Assessment & Accreditation Council, Bangalore (NAAC).

Marathwada College of Education is credited as the only college in Maharashtra with an intake capacity of 330 students at B.Ed. level and 75 students at M.Ed. level. The medium of instruction at B.Ed. is Urdu, English and Marathi while the practice teaching is done in Urdu, Marathi, Hindi and English languages. This is the only Urdu medium college to get cent percent grant and caters to the education of weaker sections of society. The college is included in the category of 2(f) and 12(b) of the University Grants Commission (UGC). The college has obtained the religious minority institution since April – 2003.

Spread on Maulana Azad Educational Trust’s sprawling Dr Rafiq Zakaria Campus at Aurangabad, the College provides training for the degree of Bachelor in Education (B.Ed.) on the most modern lines. As the late President of India, Late Mrs Indira Gandhi said following her visit here, "The campus seems to be a fine example of what can be done in engrafting on the old, the requirements of the present."
