The word Rangoli originates from the Sanskrit terms 'Rang' (color) and 'Aavalli' (row or line), literally translating to "rows of colors." In Maharashtra, traditional daily floor patterns drawn at doorsteps are widely referred to as 'Rangavalli'.

Maharashtra is the birthplace of Sanskar Bharti, a distinct, modern style of rangoli created specifically for large-scale public events, festivals, and processions. Unlike traditional fine-line rangoli made using just two fingers, Sanskar Bharti uses three or five fingers simultaneously to draw bold, concentric, carpet-like patterns. It uses vibrant color fills overlayed with intricate white motifs (Jali work), allowing artists to cover massive street intersections rapidly.

During the Maratha Empire, particularly under the Peshwas, drawing rangoli became a refined courtly art form. Historical records show that special rangoli artists (Rangavallikars) were commissioned to decorate the entrances of forts and palaces before royal assemblies, military victories, and festivals like Gudi Padwa.

Maharashtra's contemporary artists pioneered Pani Varil Rangoli (Water Rangoli). Artists draw intricate rangolis on the surface of still water using a layer of finely powdered charcoal or oil as a base substrate, allowing powder pigments to float seamlessly without sinking.
