🌴 International Day of the Tropics 🌏
Today, we celebrate the vibrant ecosystems, rich cultures, and incredible biodiversity of the Tropics — the region between the Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn that’s home to over 40% of the world’s population.
📜 Why June 29?
This date marks the launch of the first State of the Tropics Report in 2014, a groundbreaking study led by Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi and 12 tropical research institutions. In 2016, the United Nations officially declared June 29 as a day to spotlight the unique challenges faced by tropical regions — from climate change and deforestation to poverty and rapid urbanization.
🌱 Why it matters:
The Tropics host 80% of the world’s biodiversity and are vital to global climate stability. Yet, they face disproportionate environmental and socio-economic pressures. This day reminds us to protect and uplift these regions through sustainable action and global cooperation.

🌿 World Rainforest Day! 🌿

Today, June 22nd, we celebrate Rainforest Day – a perfect opportunity to shine a spotlight on these incredible, vital ecosystems!

Rainforests are so much more than just dense forests; they are the lungs of our planet, producing a significant portion of the world's oxygen. They are also biodiversity hotspots, home to an astonishing array of plant and animal species, many of which are yet to be discovered. From the vibrant colours of exotic birds to the hidden lives of countless insects and unique flora, rainforests are truly nature's masterpieces.

Beyond their ecological importance, rainforests provide us with essential resources like medicines, food, and timber, and play a crucial role in regulating global climate patterns.

However, these precious habitats are under constant threat from deforestation, agriculture, mining, and climate change. It's up to all of us to protect them!

What can you do to help?
* Support sustainable products: Look for products certified by organizations that promote responsible forestry.
* Reduce your consumption: Less demand for new products means less pressure on natural resources.
* Spread awareness: Share the importance of rainforests with your friends and family.
* Learn more: Educate yourself about the challenges rainforests face and the solutions available.

Let's appreciate the beauty and importance of rainforests today, and commit to being their guardians every day. Our planet depends on it!

In celebration of the International Day for Biological Diversity (May 22), the Eco Club, BC College, Asansol successfully organized an Online Workshop on Photography and Introduction to Local Biodiversity.
The event witnessed an overwhelming response with 84 enthusiastic participants joining us to learn, share, and appreciate the beauty of local ecosystems.
