aharaja Shri Kamal Singh of Dumaraon estate (Dist. Shahabad) in the name and memory of his Late father Maharaja Bhadur Ram Ran Vijay Prasad Singh a great philanthropist. He donated a piece of 25 bighas of land in the heart of Ara town, the land being historical one was previously known as ‘Judge Sahab ki kothi’. “Ara House’ a national monument is linked to bravery of first war of independence. It is on record that Babu Kunwar Singh along with native army forced the British officer of the district to take shelter in this British house for safety. The house was under seize for days and that could be lifted only after arrival of additional British force. This house long served as Veer Kunwar Singh museum and is now being given reshape under care and supervision of archeological survey of India. The university and the college both are proud of historical possession which will soon be converted into a place of tourist attraction. It was the bravery & sacrifice of Veer Kunwar Singh that this Janpad was declared independent on the 23rd April 1858 from the British rule. Though it lasted for only short time but people of this Janpad as well as the teachers, employees and students of this college celebrate 23rd April every year as the ‘Victory Day’ with great fanfare. The college is the premier institute of higher education in Bihar. It became constituent unit of Magadh University Bodh Gaya on 1st Feb. 1976. After bifurcation of Magadh University, Bodh Gaya, the new university, Veer Kunwar Singh University, with headquarters at Ara was established in Oct. 1992. University was named in the name of Babu Kunwar Singh, a Jamindar of Jagdishpur and a hero of 1st war of independence. The college is recognized under the 2(f) and 12(b) of the UGC and receiving regular grants. The college strictly observes the UGC norms and guidelines in the academic matter. The college imparts teaching in Arts, Science upto PG level and in commerce, vocational courses upto UG level. It has several thousands of students on its roll. After considering its academic achievements in the field of Physical, social science and Humanities, the college enhanced upon a new venture in the direction of vocationalisation and Job oriented courses. This college is pioneer in starting vocational courses in Sericulture (2001), BCA (2004), Biotechnology (2004) and Industrial Microbiology (2007) in this region. The faculty members of this college are capable of handling the programme of learning in traditional as well as job oriented vocational courses. Our aim to impart quality education in this college is strictly adhered to work with a positive vision to improve the various programmes and encourage the teachers for very cordial atmosphere in the college and students freely interact with one another for sharing and improving their ideas. The college is fortunate that from the very beginning educationist of repute joined this college as principal like late. Dr. Grokh Nath Singh, great economist & DPI Bihar, Late. Singh, Late. Bhagirath Singh, Dr. Surendra Narayan Singh. Dr. Gandhijee Roy, the present principal is an educationist par excellence, has got different awards for his works in political science. A study center of Nalanda Open University is also being run efficiently in the college campus. The college has 10 large buildings for academic purposes, separate library building, reading room, separate common room for boys & girls, gymnasium hall and large field for sports and other activities. There are twelve teacher’s flats in the college campus. The library has several thousand books including journals. The laboratories are equipped with all the modern amenities.
