Activity: Making an Iron Bar a Magnet
Aim:
To make an iron bar magnetic using the stroking method.
Materials Required:
Iron bar
Bar magnet
Small iron pins or paper clips
A flat surface
Procedure:
Place the iron bar on a table.
Take a bar magnet and place one pole of the magnet at one end of the iron bar.
Stroke the magnet along the iron bar in one direction only, from one end to the other.
Lift the magnet after reaching the other end. Do not rub it back in the opposite direction.
Repeat this process about 30–40 times.
Bring the iron bar near some iron pins or paper clips.
Observation:
The iron bar attracts the iron pins or paper clips.
Conclusion:
The iron bar becomes a temporary magnet due to the alignment of magnetic domains inside it.
Precaution:
Always stroke the magnet in the same direction and use the same pole for every stroke.
