Celiac Disease

Celiac disease is an autoimmune condition in which consuming gluten triggers an immune response that damages the lining of the small intestine.

⚠️ Key Points to Remember:
β€’ Gluten is commonly found in wheat, barley, and rye
β€’ The immune response can damage the intestinal villi
β€’ Villous damage leads to malabsorption of essential nutrients
β€’ Common problems may include diarrhea, weight loss, fatigue, and nutritional deficiencies
β€’ Long-term untreated celiac disease can lead to serious complications
β€’ The main treatment is a strict lifelong gluten-free diet

🩺 NCLEX Tip:
πŸ‘‰ Celiac Disease = Gluten Exposure β†’ Intestinal Villous Damage β†’ Malabsorption

πŸ‘‰ Patient education: Always check food labels and avoid foods containing wheat, barley, and rye. Oats should only be consumed if they are specifically certified gluten-free, as cross-contamination can occur.

🫁 NCLEX Quick Tip: Emphysema vs. Subcutaneous Emphysema

Don't let the shared name confuse you! Here is the breakdown:

⚠️ Key Differences:
β€’ Emphysema (Pulmonary): Air is trapped inside the lungs (damaged alveoli).
β€’ Subcutaneous Emphysema: Air is trapped under the skin (chest wall, neck, or face).
β€’ Causes: Emphysema comes from chronic lung conditions like COPD or smoking. Subcutaneous Emphysema comes from trauma or medical procedures.
β€’ Signs: Emphysema causes a barrel chest and shortness of breath. Subcutaneous Emphysema causes skin swelling and a crackling sound (crepitus) when touched.

🩺 NCLEX Tip:
πŸ‘‰ Trapped air in lungs = Pulmonary Emphysema
πŸ‘‰ Trapped air under skin = Subcutaneous Emphysema
