Researchers from Tel Aviv University and the French CNRS re-examined a ~140,000-year-old child fossil from Skhul Cave, Israel, and found a mix of Neanderthal and Homo sapiens features. The skull shape resembles modern humans, but the inner ear and jaw show Neanderthal traits. This combination suggests early interbreeding between the two species in the Levant—about 100,000 years earlier than previously believed. The finding indicates that the region was an evolutionary crossroads where early humans and Neanderthals interacted and exchanged genes, highlighting a complex, interconnected model of human evolution rather than simple replacement.
