Notching in apple trees is a pruning technique used to encourage branch development on young, bare stems (whips) by cutting into the bark just above a dormant bud. This injury interrupts the downward flow of auxin hormones, forcing the bud to grow into a new, productive branch, which improves tree structure and increases fruit yield.

One of the most nutritious common apples, a Granny Smith apple has 13 times more phytonutrients than a Ginger Gold, according to Robinson.
Timing: Early spring when both the rootstock and scion wood are dormant is the best time for grafting.
Materials: You will need scion wood (desired variety, 1-year-old wood), compatible rootstock, a sharp knife, pruners, grafting tape/rubber bands, and sealant (grafting wax or parafilm).
Whip and Tongue: A common technique where angled, interlocking cuts are made on both the rootstock and scion to create a secure, stable joint that encourages callus formation.
Cambium Alignment: The most critical step is lining up the cambium layers (the green, inner bark) of the scion and rootstock, as this is where they heal together.
Sealing: Wrap the union tightly with grafting tape and cover with sealant to prevent the graft from drying out or becoming infected.
Aftercare: Keep grafted trees in a cool, moist environment (e.g., in pots with damp material) for 2-4 weeks, then move into full sun once growth begins, removing any shoots that grow from the rootstock below the graft.
