Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is one of the most important festivals celebrated in India. It symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and good over evil.
According to Hindu history, Diwali marks the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after completing 14 years of exile and defeating the demon king Ravana. The people of Ayodhya welcomed him by lighting rows of diyas (oil lamps), which began the tradition of celebrating Deepawali. The day is also dedicated to the worship of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha for prosperity, happiness, and peace in homes.
According to Sikh history, Diwali is celebrated as “Bandi Chhor Divas.” On this day, Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji was released from the Gwalior Fort along with 52 kings whom he helped to gain freedom. In remembrance of this event, the Sikh community celebrates the day with great devotion. The Golden Temple in Amritsar is beautifully illuminated with lamps and fireworks.
Thus, Diwali is not only a festival of lights but also a symbol of love, freedom, unity, and the triumph of goodness.
