On August 6, 1945, the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, during World War II. The explosion devastated much of the city, killing and injuring large numbers of civilians. Many more people later died from burns, radiation exposure, and related effects.
The bombing remains one of the most devastating events in human history and a lasting warning about the catastrophic consequences of nuclear weapons.
