മാർ അത്തനേഷ്യസ്‌ ഹയർ സെക്കൻഡറി സ്കൂളിലെ 80-)ഠ വാർഷികം ജനുവരി18 ന് നടന്നു. ബഹുമാനഖപ്പെട്ട എം. എൽ. എ. അൻവർ സാദത്ത്‌ പരിപാടി ഉൽഘാടനം ചെയ്തു. ഈ വിദ്യാലയത്തിൽ സേവനം അനുഷ്ഠിച്ചു വിരമിക്കുന്ന റൂബി പി വർഗീസ്, ജെയിംസ്‌ ഫിലിപ്പ്, ലിസ്സി വർക്കി, എ പി മോളി എന്നീ അദ്ധ്യാപകരെ ആദരിച്ചു.

1947 ഓഗസ്റ്റ് 15 ന് ഇന്ത്യക്ക് സ്വാതന്ത്യം ലഭിച്ചെങ്കിലും ഇന്ത്യയുടെ പരമോന്നത ഭരണ ഘടന നിലവിൽ വന്നത് 1950 ജനുവരി 26 നാണ്.
1947 മുതൽ 1950 വരെയുള്ള കൈമാറ്റ കാലയളവിൽ ജോർജ്ജ് നാലാമനായിരുന്നു ഇന്ത്യയുടെ ഭരണ തലവൻ. ആ കാലഘട്ടത്തിലെഗവർണർ ജനറൽ സി. രാ‍ജഗോപാലാചാരി ആയിരുന്നു. 1950 ജനുവരി 26 ന് ഡോ. രാജേന്ദ്രപ്രസാദ് ഇന്ത്യയുടെ ആദ്യത്തെ രാഷ്ട്രപതിയായി തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കപ്പെട്ടു.

"ഇന്ത്യ ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ഭരണത്തിൽ നിന്നും മോചിതമായി ഒരു പരമോന്നത റിപ്പബ്ലിക് രാജ്യമായതിന്‍റെ ഓർമ്മക്കായി
ജനുവരി 26 ന് ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നതിനെയാണ് റിപ്പബ്ലിക് ദിനം എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്"
