Difference between speed and velocity

1. Speed is the distance travelled per unit time
Velocity is the displacement per unit time

2. Speed is irrespective of direction
Velocity is direction specific

3. Speed is a scalar Quantity
Velocity is a vector Quantity

Motion
A body is said to be in motion if it changes its position with respect to time in reference to a stationary object

Distance
The total length of the path travelled irrespective of the direction is called distance.

Displacement
The shortest straight line path between initial and final position along with direction is called displacement

Scalar Quantity
The physical quantities having only magnitude but no direction is called scalar quantity

Vector Quantity
The physical Quantity having direction and magnitude both is called vector Quantity

Found this very nice story of Adi Shankaracharya teaching his students how to empty and free their mind:

"Adi Sankara was walking through the market place with his disciples.

They saw a man dragging a cow by a rope.
Sankara told the man to wait and asked his disciples to surround them.

“I am going to teach you something” and continued...
“Tell me who is bound to whom? Is the cow bound to this man or the man is bound to the cow?"

The disciples said without hesitation “Of course the cow is bound to the man!. The man is the master. He is holding the rope. The cow has to follow him wherever he goes. The man is the master and the cow is the slave.”

“Now watch this”, said Sankara and took a pair of scissors from his bag and cut the rope.

The cow ran away from the master and the man ran after his cow. “Look, what is happening”, said Sankara

“Do you see who the Master is? The cow is not at all interested in this man. The cow in fact, is trying to escape from this man.
This is the case with our MIND.

Like the cow, all the non-sense that we carry inside is not interested in us. WE ARE INTERESTED IN IT, we are keeping it together somehow or the other. We are going crazy trying to keep it all together under our control.

The moment we lose interest in all the garbage filled in our head, and the moment we understand the futility of it, it will start to disappear. Like the cow, it will escape and disappear.”

We can allow disappearing of all the unwanted things from our mind and feel relaxed...

How to construct a parallel line from a point outside the line

Draw a line segment AB
Mark a Point P outside the line segment
Join P to any point on the line segment AB say Q
From Q with a suitable radius make an arc cutting the line PQ
With the same radius construct another arc from point P.
Measure the length of the previous arc, and cut the same length on the arc drawn from point P and name it as R
Join P to the point R and extend it to both sides. You have successfully constructed a line parallel to the line segment AB

Solve:

A policeman was returning to his police post, which was ahead of him in the north direction. When he was 100m away, he turned left and walked 20m to reach point A. He further walked in the same direction for another 40m to reach point B. He then turned right and walked 20m again to reach point C. How far and in which direction is he from the police post?
