Lions are majestic animals and the second-largest cats in the world, after tigers. Lions are designated as a vulnerable species on the Red List of Threatened Species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Wildlife Experts have long recognized two subspecies of lion, Panthera leo leo (African lion) and Panthera leo persica (Asiatic lion). Asiatic lions (also called Asian or Indian lions) are slightly smaller than African lions.

Lions once roamed Africa, Asia and Europe, but now only live in parts of Africa and India. Wild Asiatic lions are found in just a single area, the Gir Forest in Indian state of Gujarat. India's Asiatic lion population has seen a significant increase, rising by 32% from 674 in 2020 to 891 in 2025. On the 10th of August each year, we celebrate 'World Lion Day' aiming to spread awareness for the conservation of the lion and its natural habitat.
