PCOS has a new name! — It’s PMOS
(Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome)
Why? Because the old name never told the full story.
‘Polycystic ovarian syndrome’ makes it sound like the problem is only about ‘cysts’ in the ovaries.
But women with PCOS don’t actually have cysts.
And the condition affects much more than the ovaries.
PCOS can impact:
• hormones
• weight and metabolism
• insulin resistance
• skin and hair
• fertility
• periods
• mental health
• long-term risks like diabetes and heart disease
The proposed new name, PMOS, tries to reflect the bigger picture:
this is a whole-body hormonal and metabolic condition — not just an “ovary problem.”
A name change alone won’t change treatment overnight.
But better names can improve awareness, reduce confusion, and help women get diagnosed earlier and taken more seriously.
