The bitter satire and humour that Beatty uses says it all. Just finished reading this and coudn't agree more on how politicized racism has become. Beatty digs in the past, he believes that history should be remembered and not meant to be revised because it is not a thing of the past but always stays with us! I liked the idea of how a fictional ghetto town ( Dickens) is wiped off the map by whites( for their own economic gain) under the facade and guise of liberalism and black-friendly discourse. The narrator brings back his town on the map ( though very differently) as he believes that the act of wiping this ghetto town off the map is an assault on the Afro-American identity. The protagonist re-initiates segregation ( he believes that sometimes it brings people together and blacks perform better in segregated schools) and hence is charged of violating the civil rights. The author tried to uncover the power politics and ideologies behind racism in 'post -racial' America ( particularly when Obama ruled). 'Post-racial' is an absurd phrase as blatant forms of racism are still rampant. Thought the Americans elected an Afro-American president, yet crimes against coloured folks didn't decrease. He makes a plea that the white logos will never make a room for blackness; hence the Afro-Americans should create their own identity, epistemology, ontology and logos.
Let white people consider blackness as an anti-thesis to whiteness, and let blackness pave its own way! Unmitigated blackness will stay with you, its your identity and pride!!
